Braun Strowman (c) vs. Bray Wyatt

Universal Championship match

For all intents and purposes, this is the perfect feud to run post WrestleMania for Braun Strowman.

Strowman is kind of an accidental champion. He wasn’t the original plan. When the Fiend Bray Wyatt lost the Universal title to Goldberg at Super ShowDown, the plan was for Fiend to go and feud with John Cena while Goldberg would defend (and lose) the Universal title to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania.

But then Reigns very understandably opted to stop working due to the coronavirus pandemic and Braun Strowman slotted into the role with legit zero build. They just announced he’d be replacing Roman the day before the match.

So coming out of that WrestleMania, jumping into a ready made feud with Bray Wyatt makes perfect sense. The history is there. Braun debuted as the black sheep of the Wyatt family. He was part of that cult. Now he’s broken free and holds the championship the Bray so recently lost.

It’s also an opportunity for WWE to hit the reset button given plans didn’t go the way they wanted if they so choose.

Now that Roman isn’t around to get back to the plan they had in place, and probably won’t for a long while, is WWE going to take the opportunity to give Strowman the run on top that he probably should have had a year or two ago? Or are they going to hit the reset button and put it back on Bray Wyatt and get back to where they were a couple months ago?

Honestly, they should give Braun Strowman his run on top now that they’re there. After he got hot a couple years ago, booking has done all it could to cool him off. He’s had multiple title matches where he walked out as a failure. If they backtrack this soon, that would further weaken Strowman.

Bray doesn’t need the title to be a big deal. His Fiend character has some give to it. He lost to Goldberg in a rough fashion and doesn’t seem to have harmed him. (You could also argue the Fiend character is a tough character to put the title on in general.)

That’s just my take. We’ll see tonight what the creative team in WWE thinks when these forces collide.

Bray Wyatt challenges his old protege Braun Strowman for the Universal title tonight at Money in the Bank, starting at 7 ET on WWE Network. And keep it here at CagesideSeats.com for all your Money in the Bank coverage.
