WrestleMania 36 preview: SmackDown Tag Title Triple Threat Ladder match

Triple Threat Ladder match for the SmackDown Tag Team championship

The New Day and The Usos will challenge The Miz & Morrison for their belts, in a match which may only involve two or three people.

The Road to WrestleMania 36

You don’t really need a ton of story with these teams. The New Day and The Usos have been the standard bearers of the main roster tag scene for years. The Miz & Morrison wasted no time reminding us what great chemistry they have in the ring and on the mic. This would be entertaining if it had the same build as, say, Aleister Black & Bobby Lashley.

Or Goldberg vs. Braun Strowman.

But there’s a solid story, too. When the new champs first title defense happened in an Elimination Chamber match at Elimination Chamber, Kofi Kingston & Big E and Jimmy & Jey Uso started the match, and were the last teams eliminated before Miz & Morrison retained. So those teams got to fight on last week’s SmackDown for a WrestleMania title shot.

Heels that they are, the Turtleneck Tough Guys couldn’t resist being ringside to mock their rivals. They ended up getting involved, of course. Voila - Triple Threat!

That’s where things get weird.

Even before that match aired, reports came out that Miz was sick and had been pulled out of the match at the Mar. 25 & 26 taping. Follow-up stories said that Morrison would wrestle against... someone or ones. But no specifics were confirmed. And unlike the card changes with Roman Reigns and Andrade, WWE has officially remained mum.

The A-Lister was involved right up until last night’s brawl, the final sell for a ladder match involving all six men.

What’s at stake

Normally, I’d say “the belts”. But really, if this turns into a singles match or non-tag Triple Threat, will it still be for the Tag titles? Even if it is, won’t they just run it back when they can get all the teams involved?

Don’t get me wrong. As mentioned above, the planned match would be great without a logical build, and there’s a logical build here. If Miz really is out, any combination they can come up with of Morrison vs. Big E or Kofi vs. Jimmy or Jey could be a match of the weekend affair.

But even for what will be an unusual WrestleMania at an unprecedented time for the world, the uncertainty heading into this one is... odd.
