Nia Jax says she went to WWE officials because ‘a certain somebody’ was injuring Alexa Bliss in matches

On a Twitch stream with Renee Young, Paige, Natalya, Peyton Royce and Billie Kay, Nia Jax told a story which most fans are interpreting as being about Ronda Rousey. Since it’s also about injuries to Alexa Bliss, the quote has generated a ton of discussion online.

Jax doesn’t specifically say Rousey’s name, but here’s transcription and the clip itself, so you can make your own judgement.

“I remember back when... I’m not going to mention any names. But Lexie [Alexa Bliss], well other than Lexi’s name, [laughs] she was working an angle and she was seriously getting hurt. A certain angle with a certain somebody, and I remember not saying anything, specifically because she wanted to be a team player, like, she as so nervous, she wants to be a team player. She didn’t want to be somebody who, like, ‘Oh, I can’t do this.’

But for me personally, from the outside looking in, I was so angry. I was like, ‘No, she cannot do this anymore.’ I personally would not allow her to get back in the ring to get hurt again. I had to go to the people, the higher-ups, and I had to put down a stern foot, and said, ‘Listen, look, Lexi is 5-foot-nothing, 100 pounds, getting thrown around like a little rag doll and injured ever night.’ I was like, ‘Put me in. I’m a 6 foot, 300 pound bitch, I can handle it.’

So I understand there is a certain thing of like, being quiet and taking it, and being like, ‘No, I want to be a team player.’ And there’s another side where there’s like, ‘Shit dude. I can’t allow to see one of my good friends, not only my good friend, but my co-worker who I want to be here in 5 years so I can continue to work her, like, getting hurt.’ I needed to stand up and friggin’ be there for her, and make sure that she’s gonna be here, like, her livelihood is going to be OK when she’s done here.”

The Rousey connection is made more clear when Nia’s story is viewed in light of WWE Network’s 365 documentary feature on Bliss which was released last July, and covered her 2018 injury issues. That fall, Bliss dealt with concussions which caused her to miss Evolution and which was said to be career-threatening. Both happened while working with Rousey (one at Hell in a Cell in September, and one at a house show the next month) and both while she was taking the same move.

Alexa discussed the Hell in a Cell spot during 365:

Hell In a Cell happened and I took a headlock takeover, and when I did my head went straight into the mat. This stuff happens and it was no one’s fault,” Bliss said. “I had a really bad headache. I told our doctors, I said, ‘Hey, something’s just not right. My head just doesn’t feel right.’ I landed in Orlando the next day and I take the ImPACT Test, and I fail it. I fail it pretty good. So that’s when they diagnosed the concussion. I got called into Vince McMahon’s office and he was like, ‘We’re going to give you time off, we’re going to send you to the best doctors and we’re going to figure out what’s going on. I want you to rest and recover because we need you 100%’”

She also covered the house show injury, and Nia’s reaction to that:

“We slipped. Crashed and burned. I was in the training room and my nose is bleeding. I was crying. The doc said, ‘I think you’re concussed.’

That’s when Nia stepped in. She said, ‘I’m gonna call your mom, tell her you’re coming home, you’re staying with me tonight. I’m driving you.’ She kind of just took me under her wing that day and it’s like the process starts all over again.”

After Bliss returned at the 2019 Royal Rumble, she did not work with Rousey again for the remainder of Ronda’s run.

The topic of wrestlers injuring their co-workers is always a contentious one, and it’s amplified here by many fans’ strong feelings about Rousey, as well as Jax’s own issues with in-ring accidents. Coincidentally, the highest profile injuries Nia was involved in happened at around this same time - Zelina Vega suffering a concussion after being thrown from the ring by Jax at Evolution, and the punch she concussed and busted Becky Lynch open with prior to Survivor Series.
