WWE SUPER SHOWDOWN LIVE BLOG & MATCH COVERAGE

Hey folks.

No lyrics today. As has become standard practice for me with these shows, I’m going to use my platform here to express my unhappiness with WWE’s relationship with Saudi Arabia. More specifically, owing to my nature as a queer trans woman, Saudi Arabia is, uh... not very friendly to people like me, and so seeing WWE act as a propaganda arm for this regime really sucks sometimes.

But as always, I refuse to sit back and leave my colleagues here at Cageside Seats, who have played such a huge part in making me feel comfortable to be out and proud as the woman I am, high and dry, so I’m liveblogging the show.

As it turns out, tomorrow is a very special day for me— two years ago, on February 28, 2018, at about 10:30PM, after years of inner turmoil and about two months of a deep, sunken depression, I spoke the words “I am a woman” out loud to myself for the first time, and it was like a weight came off my shoulders.

Within two weeks I was out to the world and it’s been the best two years of my life. I’ve gotten on hormones and seen my brain fog clear, I’ve become the person I always wanted to be, more capable than I ever dreamed I could be, and I’ve moved away from my family (who have been very supportive) to live in the big city with the girl I love.

And none of this could have happened if I had been born somewhere like Saudi Arabia. It’s only though happenstance, through the accidental details of my birth, that I’ve been able to do any of this, and it breaks my heart to think of my brothers, sisters, and nonbinary siblings who weren’t so lucky.

On with the show!

The OC (Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows) vs. Viking Raiders (Erik & Ivar)

Anderson and Erik to start, Viking Raiders take control and work Machine Gun over. Gallows with the distraction, Anderson gets free and makes the tag. Big Hoot pummelling Erik in the corner, big boot, the OC take their turn working the erstwhile Ray Rowe over. Ivar gets the tag and clears house, freight train crossbody, chops, Flair Flip, forearm from the apron, up top, nobody home, roll through, Banzai Drop!

Cartwheel lariat follows and Warbeard is fired up! Bronco Buster dodged, tags made and Erik starts pasting Luke. Rolling elbow, overhead exploder suplex, tag back to Ivar. Corner lariat, Erik slams him into Gallows, cover broken up by Karl. Dumping him to the floor, tag back to Erik. Big Hoot with the chokebomb for separation, Erik with the hip toss knee when Anderson tags in!

Ivar legal, handspring double back elbow connects! Up top, nobody home on the moonsault! The OC capitalize...

The OC win by pinfall with the Magic Killer.

The show proper opens with a video package about legacy and how you have to win to create one.

AJ Styles vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas vs. Bobby Lashley vs. Erick Rowan vs. R-Truth vs. Rey Mysterio (Tuwaiq Trophy Gauntlet Match)

R-Truth and Bobby Lashley are our first two.

Bob with the wristlock, shift to a side headlock, shot off, drop down, satellite tijeras from Truth! Stinger Splash, mounted punches but Lashley cuts him off and blasts him off the apron with a forearm! Ramming him into the barricade, back inside, smashing Ron’s face into the turnbuckle, shoulder thrust in the corner, and a delayed vertical suplex as punctuation!

Cover gets two, reverse chinlock applied, Truth fights out, right hands, off the ropes, shoulder block, shoulder block but Bob shrugs it off! Gutwrench, Ron slips out, fall-forward Blue Thunder Driver, “You can’t see me!”, Five Knuckle Shuffle! Fireman’s carry denied, block Lashley’s reverse STO and drop him with a heel kick! Uppercut in the corner, Bob gets the reverse STO on the second try!

Duck the shoulder thrust...

R-Truth eliminates Bobby Lashley by pinfall with a folding press.

Lashley beats Truth down after, taking him to the floor and throwing him into the ringpost and the steel steps before returning him to the ring. Lying in wait... spear!

Andrade “Cien” Almas comes out next as referee Shaun Bennett tends to Truth, who’s been busted open somewhere on his cheek.

Almas right on him with kicks in the corner and Bennett calls for the bell!

Shoulder armbreaker, cross armbar in the ropes, wrenching it in before putting boots to Truth in the middle of the ring. Kneeling armbar to follow, then putting boots to Ron in the corner. Fired up, corner knees, looking for the hammerlock DDT but Truth rams him into the corner to force the break. Shoulder armbreaker and a chop, charging in but Ron is down and Andrade spills over the top and to the floor!

Whip across, corkscrew forearm, lariat, kick to the midsection, off the ropes, Almas gets a boot up but they knock heads...

R-Truth eliminates Andrade “Cien” Almas by accidental pinfall after a meeting of the minds.

Erick Rowan is up next, his pet in hand.

Rowan with a corner body avalanche and a body slam, taking his vest off, elbow drop, grounded punches, but Truth low-bridges him. Slingshot dive, taking Erick out. The big man recovers, headbutt connects, dropkick puts Ron into the steel steps and sends Erick’s pet flying! He checks on the cage and sets it on the apron before throwing Truth into the steps a few more times.

Headbutt lays Truth out, referee Shaun Bennett up to a count of seven as Rowan picks up the steel steps...

Erick Rowan is eliminated by disqualification.

In the ring, picking Truth up... CLAWSLAM!

AJ Styles is out next.

Truth unable to get to his feet, Styles mocks him by busting a move before kicking him in the face. Continuing to strut and dance as he punishes Ron. Front kicks, a knee lift, stomps to the leg, elbow drop to the knee, more dancing and mocking as he continues to target the leg. Calf Killer applied...

AJ Styles eliminates R-Truth by submission with the Calf Killer.

Rey Mysterio is our final competitor but when his music plays he’s nowhere to be seen.

AJ is all smiles, Rey’s music plays again and this time we cut backstage to where the OC are beating him down!

Styles calls for the mic and says it doesn’t look like Mysterio is getting up from that, so he wins by forfeit. He demands that referee Shaun Bennett raise his hand but he refuses, and AJ calls him the worst ref in the business. Styles goes to the timekeeper and demands he ring the bell, but again he meets a refusal. Ref and ring announcer confer and announce that if Rey can’t answer a count of ten, AJ wins the match.

Cut backstage to where the OC guys are breathing heavy and in a bad way, writhing on the floor, and a person in a long black coat walks past.

(DONG.)

It is, of course, the Undertaker.

Taker with the goozle... CHOKESLAM! Cover...

The Undertaker, who was not in the match but is presumably a legal participant per the Shane McMahon Best in the World Precedent, wins, last eliminating AJ Styles by pinfall with a chokeslam to win the Tuwaiq Trophy.

New Day get a promo wherein they dissect Miz’s entrance theme saying he came to play and say this ain’t no bounce house nor hopscotch, this is where they show everyone why they’re the best tag team in the world.

New Day (Big E & Kofi Kingston) (c) vs. the Miz & John Morrison (WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship)

Miz and E to start, collar and elbow, backing the A-Lister into the corner and breaking dirty with a pieface to prove his superiority. Back to the lockup, Big with a short-arm back elbow this time, another, Miz ducks a third and goes behind but E shrugs him off and gives him a pelvic thrust or two for good measure. A-Lister with kicks and punches, off the ropes, Big catches him and grabs an abdominal stretch.

Spanking away, Miz gets away, tag to Morrison but he just runs into a belly-to-belly suplex and a tag to Kofi. Off the ropes, senton for two, quick tag back to E. Working Johnny SmackDown over, but he gets away and takes Big out with a tornillo after he goes to the floor! Quick tags from the heels now, working Big E over, targeting his knee to keep him off-balance. Springboard roundhouse Hart Attack gets a nearfall, but E gets separation and tags are made!

Kingston running hot on Morrison, cut off with a kick to the gut, springboard into a Frankensteiner and then the pop-up stomp for two! Off the ropes, running kick, Boom Drop, calling for it but Miz runs in and Kofi has to dump him to the floor. Trouble in Paradise caught, John reverses, rolling Alabama Slam, off the ropes, running knee... STILL NO!

Kingston hits the SOS for a tight two, tag to E, he gets under Morrison... POWERBOMB / DOUBLE STOMP COMBO CAN’T PUT JOHN MORRISON DOWN! Miz throws Kofi into the barricade on the floor, Big runs into a thrust kick and the A-Lister gets the tag. Basement DDT for two, chest kicks, E with a powerbomb lift but Miz floats out. Tag to Morrison, inverted headlock backbreaker, John assists the neckbreaker with a double stomp, Starship Pain... NOBODY HOME!

Tag to Kofi, he cuts Morrison off from the tag and lands on his feet off a back suplex. E tags back in, inverted suplex sets him up... MIDNIGHT HOUR BUT MIZ BREAKS THE PIN UP! Kingston dumps him to the floor, off the ropes... THE A-LISTER SIDESTEPS THE TRUST FALL SENTON! Miz tags in, slips out of the Big Ending, Skull-Crushing Finale... NO GOOD!

Corner knees, Big gets away from the Awesome Clothesline and both men are down and out. Tag to Kingston first, he jumps, Skull-Crushing Finale, reverse to a victory roll, O’Connor roll into a side press but Morrison gets a cheap shot with a chair...

The Miz & John Morrison win by pinfall with a schoolboy pin and a handful of tights from Miz on Kofi Kingston to win the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship.

Buddy Murphy and Seth Rollins are interviewed backstage.

Rollins talks about how the Street Profits’ moral compass is off-kilter and for that, they must be dealt with, but he doesn’t need a plan, because his destiny is to retain the titles today.

And I have to use the bathroom, so my girlfriend is going to take over for a moment.

Angel Garza walks down the catwalk. He looks smug, like a real asshole. He whips his hair and stuff. Cut to flashbacks of him punching his cousin, also like a asshole. Oh, and he hurted Rey Mysterio by slamming him in the concrete. Did I mention his assholeness?

Oh snap, enter Englebert Humperdink. Sorry, Humberto Carrillo. Also smug, but there’s a plucky underdog vibe to him. His shirt is blue, which is my favorite color, so I like him more.

...I love her so much, y’all.

Angel Garza vs. Humberto Carrillo

Fast-paced lucha jockeying for positioning in the opening moments, Carrillo with his springboard headbutt, knucklelock, double-jump lucha arm drag, sending Garza to the floor! Off the ropes, suicide dive, elbow to the ribs, back inside, cover only gets one. Snapmare, off the ropes, basement dropkick but Angel kicks out at one again. Garza gets him trapped in the corner, dropkick to the knees, take his pants off, running kick to the kidney!

Overhead blows, snapmare sets up a camel clutch and he wrenches back on it. Carrillo posts up, Angel drops him with a mat slam and goes right back to the hold. Suplex attempt, Humberto lands on his feet and lays Garza out with a kick! Charging in, back body drop sets him in the ropes, Carrillo with a shotei and a springboard roundhouse kick! All fired up, back roll standing moonsault but Angel is in the ropes and he has to reposition, allowing for the nearfall.

Headed up top, diving, Garza cuts him out of mid-air with a dropkick! Underhooks, thinking Wing Clipper but Humberto rolls through and hits a northern superkick! Angel returns a normal superkick, Carrillo staggered but able to fire back with a huge right hand! Flip piledriver, Humberto doesn’t get all of it but both guys are still down and out.

Small package for two, Carrillo returns a superkick, moonsault, he sees Garza with the feet up and adjusts, trading pinning predicaments...

Angel Garza wins by pinfall with a rana pin.

Bayley is interviewed backstage.

She says she’s making history again, just like she has her entire career. But tonight isn’t just about history, it’s about proving again and again that she’s the most dominant champion in SmackDown history.

Buddy Murphy & Seth Rollins (c) vs. Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) (WWE Raw Tag Team Championship)

Dawkins starting hot with a spear on Murphy, mounted punches, tag to Ford. Whip across, into a missile dropkick, biel Rollins in, stereo dropkicks and they dump the Monday Night Messiah to the floor. Whip reversed, up and over, cartwheel into a backflip to taunt and a dropkick for one. Right hand gets a kick, Buddy blasts Montez off the apron and into the Arabic announce table!

Heels working Ford over, nearfall off a Meteora, taking him to the floor and beating him down. Montez is able to whip Murphy into the barricade and sidestep a Seth dive that puts him into the barricade, the path is clear, desperate and reaching... BUT BUDDY YANKS ANGELO DAWKINS OFF THE APRON! Rollins from behind, forearm sets up a Falcon Arrow, only good for two.

Double back suplex, Ford lands on his feet, up and over, tag to Dawkins! Angelo clearing house, corkscrew uppercut and a pair of dropkicks, corkscrew Stinger Splashes, off the ropes, one-handed bulldog! Fired up, overhead exploder suplex... NOPE! Tag to Montez, whip-assisted corkscrew Stinger Splash, Murphy has to break up the pin! Buddy dumps Angelo but eats an enzuigiri from Ford!

Seth with a schoolboy for two, swinging neckbreaker a fakeout into an enzuigiri and Montez heads up top, frog splash... BUDDY BREAKS UP THE PIN! Ford gives chase on the floor and Dawkins puts Murphy over the announce table! Tag made, electric chair, Rollins slips out, Montez has to roll through and Seth dumps him to the floor. Grabbing Dawkins, Murphy back up, Ford caught on a springboard!

Looking for stereo Pedigrees... REVERSED TO STEREO DDTS! Off the ropes, Ford with a tope con giro... BUT HE GETS CAUGHT AND POWERBOMBED INTO THE BARRICADE! Angelo Dawkins with a plancha, a flapjack for Rollins, throwing Buddy back inside where referee Darrick Moore checks on him. Seth holds him off long enough for Murphy to hit a hard knee, Moore warns him off and Rollins hits Blackout...

Buddy Murphy & Seth Rollins win by pinfall with a lateral press from Murphy on Angelo Dawkins to retain the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship.

Robert Roode jawing at Mansoor and shoving at him before the match, demanding respect, but all he gets is a shove right back. Duck a lariat, dropkick connects and referee Eddie Orengo ejects Roo before the match can begin!

Dolph Ziggler vs. Mansoor

Collar and elbow, into the corner, jockeying for position, kick to the midsection and Ziggler gets a side headlock. Wrenching it in, back to the lockup, pick the arm, Dolph rakes his eyes but Mansoor is able to reverse to a wristlock of his own. Rolling it through, into a reverse chinlock, shot off, shoulder block and Mansoor is fired up!

O’Connor roll denied but the standing moonsault lands true! Orengo counting, Ziggler with a back elbow and a dropkick, cover for two. Going after the eyes again, snapmare, Heartstopper elbow drop, only two. Grinding Mansoor down, again raking the eyes. Rolling, big spots, Mansoor starts fighting back, slingshot neckbreaker... NOPE!

Dolph hangs him up in the Tree of Woe briefly before hitting the Zig Zag for a close nearfall of his own! Ziggler misses with a superkick, reverses out of whatever Manny has planned into a small package for two! Sidestep the corner body avalanche... BACKFLIP DDT IN THE CORNER! Lining him up...

Mansoor wins by pinfall with a diving moonsault.

Post-match, Mansoor is interviewed and he thanks the crowd for picking him up and giving him hope when he has nothing left.

Into the cage again, grinding his face into the steel, climbing the cage while Reigns writhes in pain on the mat. Roman climbs and knocks him down, Baron gets under him but the Big Dog blocks the powerbomb with right hands. Taking him down, cover for two, calling for it, Superman Punch caught and shrugged off... DEEP SIX!

Wristlock from the challenger, champion runs to the apron and pulls her through, wrenching her arm around the middle rope and breaking at referee Darrick Moore’s count of three. Off the ropes, Naomi snaps off a Frankensteiner and Bayley heads to the floor for a breather. Off the ropes... TORNILLO WIPES THE CHAMPION OUT! Back inside, Bayley catches the roundhouse kick and blasts her off the apron with a back elbow!

Throwing Naomi into the barricade, the champion fired up, taking her back inside for the cover but it’s only two. Kicks to the midsection to follow, choking her briefly before shifting to a reverse chinlock. Elbows to break, thinking monkey flip but she gets blocked and Bayley clobbers her with a lariat for two!
