Reported WrestleMania 36 card features lots of women’s matches, no Triple H

WWE.com

The latest edition of Wrestling Observer Newsletter brings us our most complete look at WWE’s current plans for WrestleMania 36 in Tampa on April 5.

“Plans change” is a wrestling truism, and something The Observer’s Dave Meltzer reminds us a lot when he talks WWE. But Dave usually has a pretty good read on Vince McMahon’s plans for the Showcase of the Immortals.

A couple of things mentioned in The Observer’s report would set this year’s ‘Mania apart from previous editions: a lot of women’s matches, and for the first time since WrestleMania 23 - no Triple H.

Meltzer writes that the show in Raymond James Stadium could have six women’s bouts. Only one is currently confirmed, the NXT title showdown between Royal Rumble winner Charlotte Flair & champion Rhea Ripley. It’s expected Becky Lynch and Bayley will defend their belts at WrestleMania against Shayna Bazler and Naomi, respectively. Kabuki Warriors could put their Tag titles on the line, and we’ll likely get a Fabulous Moolah Memorial WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal. But that’s still only five, and booking ten women in the title matches probably means a lot of NXT talent in the battle royal.

Rumored matches featuring Edge, John Cena, and Undertaker will give the show its Legends presence. But one year after he retired Batista, it looks like Triple H is going to be allowed to focus on NXT and his other corporate duties this time around. As Meltzer reported last week, there’s currently no plan for Goldberg to work WrestleMania 36 after he challenges Bray Wyatt at Super ShowDown next week.

Here’s a list of announced, reportedly planned and rumored/possible matches for Sun., April 5 in Tampa:

- Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Drew McIntyre for the WWE championship (announced)

- Charlotte Flair vs. Rhea Ripley (c) for the NXT Women’s title (announced)

- Becky Lynch (c) vs. Shayna Baszler for the Raw Women’s championship (planned)

- Bray Wyatt (c) vs. Roman Reigns for the Universal title (planned)

- Naomi vs. Bayley (c) for the SmackDown Women’s championship (planned)

- Edge vs. Randy Orton (planned)

- Undertaker vs. AJ Styles (planned)

- John Cena vs. Elias (planned)

- Seventh annual Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal (planned)

- Third annual WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal (planned)

- Seth Rollins vs. Kevin Owens (rumored)

- Andrade (c) vs. Humberto Carrillo for the United States title (rumored)

- Women’s Tag Team championship match (rumored)

- Sixth women’s match (rumored)

That doesn’t address the Intercontinental or either the Raw or SmackDown tag titles; although if Rollins & Buddy Murphy still hold the red belts, his blow-off with KO could be a reason to leave that championship off the card. Matches for the IC and blue brand tag championship would put the show at 16 matches, which is what WrestleMania 35 had (with four landing on the two-hour Kickoff).

Seem like a line-up worthy of the Grandest Stage of Them All?
