WWE reportedly signs Mercedes Martinez

A trailblazing woman on the indies, she’s appeared for both NXT and AEW in the past.

According a report from SoCalUncensored (the site, not the faction), Mercedes Martinez has signed with WWE and will soon head to the Performance Center in Orlando. Wrestling Observer has confirmed that Mercedes is now under contract to WWE.

It’s a big get for Triple H & Vince McMahon, in part because it keeps one of the biggest remaining names on the independent circuit out of AEW. The 39 year old Martinez has not only worked for almost every North American independent that books women’s wrestling over the past two decades, she’s held titles for NWA affiliates, WSU, WXW, Shine, and Shimmer.

Mercedes has worked for WWE in the past, competing in both editions of the Mae Young Classic and appearing multiple times on NXT. She was also booked twice by AEW in 2019 - once for All Out’s Casino Battle Royale and once for a tag match on Dark.

No word yet on the terms of Martinez’s deal, but it wouldn’t be surprising if she takes on a player/coach role similar to Kassius Ohno’s, or if there isn’t a plan to help her transition into a producer/agent role like they’ve been doing with Tommaso Ciampa.

We shall see. In the meantime, congrats to Martinez for a hard-earned, well-deserved career achievement.
