Raw Tag Team championship match
Robert Roode & Dolph Ziggler vs. Seth Rollins & Braun Strowman (c)
A champ champ enters Spectrum Center. Will one walk out? Will it be the same one who entered?
The Road to Clash of Champions
An unlikely savior emerged for Seth Rollins when, the night after he slayed The Beast again at SummerSlam, he was outnumbered by The O.C. during his champion vs. champion match with United States titleholder AJ Styles.
That set Braun Strowman & Rollins on a collision course with the then-Raw Tag Team champs, Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson. We know how that went, because AJ’s running buddies aren’t in the Raw Tag Team title match at Clash of Champions tonight (Sept. 15).
And really, the two competing storylines heading into the defense of those belts has been the simultaneous feud between Seth & Braun over Rollins’ Universal championship, and their issues with The O.C. The former will be settled elsewhere on the card in Charlotte, North Carolina. The latter will have to wait, despite a side-program where the Monster Among Men tried & failed to take The Phenomenal One’s title, and the heel trio interrupting both of their contract signings for the match over the red strap.
At least the second contract signing involved Styles taking a Stunner from Stone Cold Steve Austin himself. And led to a match which did feature the guys who will challenge Strowman & Rollins on pay-per-view (PPV).
Yes, Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode are a tag team, probably because Vince McMahon is paying The Show-Off a lot of money and already gave him a couple months off this year. They’re also the #1 contenders, because they buried the hatchet from their 2017 feud on SmackDown, and won this match:
What’s at stake?
Most of the attention has been on how this match will impact the Universal title clash later in the night. And that makes sense, seeing as the fact two teams who didn’t exist a month ago fighting for the belts tells you pretty much everything you need to know about the Raw tag team division.
Will two guys we know damn well aren’t in the tag scene for the long haul win? Or two guys who have at least a slight chance of following The Bar’s lead and getting more over as a pair than they were as singles?
Maybe if Robert & Dolph win, they’ll update Roode’s picture for their first PPV title defense.
