When WWE brought Jerry Lawler and his “King’s Court” interview gimmick back to launch the Trish Stratus/Charlotte Flair feud for SummerSlam, it prompted some eye rolls, but it made sense. For better or for worse, Lawler’s announcing was a noticeable part of Stratus’ career. They’re also both Hall of Famers associated with the late 90s/early aughts boom period Flair deemed herself superior to.
Sports Illustrated announced a short time ago that King’s Court will return on Raw tonight (Aug. 19) and, once again, Lawler will be advancing a women’s storyline. This time, The King will get Sasha Banks’ first comments since returning to attack Natalya and brawl with Becky Lynch last Monday - and since The Boss took a break from WWE after she & Bayley dropped the tag titles to The IIconics at WrestleMania 35.
In the SI piece, Lawler puts over Banks, saying she reminds him of Randy “Macho Man” Savage. He also promotes the interview, which will be designed to get answers to why Sasha did what she did in Toronto:
“Last week opened up a lot of questions between Sasha, Nattie, and Becky, so it will be a great moment to hear an explanation from Sasha.”
Whatever you think of WWE using The King for another high-profile women’s program, it’s worth noting the promotion for tonight’s segment doesn’t mention Banks hiatus. Hopefully (at least for folks who agree with my take on the issue), that means we won’t introduce rumors or talk of booking decisions into the angle, instead focusing on kayfabe issues between the wrestlers involved in this story.
Join us tonight in the live blog when The Boss meets The King (and The Man likely storms the Court) to find out.
