After the start of the Paul Heyman era brought audience gains to Raw on July 1, all eyes went to SmackDown to see if anticipation for Eric Bischoff’s Executive Directorship and goodwill from a well-received show on Monday would translate into better numbers on July 2.
It did not.
But there were other things to consider, such as the fact that fans inside the wrestling bubble knew in advance Bischoff probably wouldn’t be as involved as Heyman at this point. We were also one day closer to the July 4 holiday here in the United States.
It translated to a small drop in viewers from the week prior, down approximately 31K to 1,890,000. That made SmackDown the seventh most watched cable original on Tuesday night, trailing the usual Fox News and MSNBC political talk.
WWE won the night in the ratings with a .56 of the 18-49 year old audience, but that was down from June 25’s number.
We’ll see what next week brings, when we’re one week closer to Easy E’s arrival and there won’t be a holiday looming. Here’s a list of SmackDown’s numbers from the past six months to tide you over until then:
