August 31 is going to be a busy day of wrestling. We know Jon Moxley and Kenny Omega will be going head-to-head in Chicago for AEW at All Out. Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi & Tetsuya Naito will be in London for New Japan Royal Quest. And Triple H will have NXT UK putting on their second TakeOver live event in Wales.
With the episode of NXT UK which premiered on WWE Network today (July 17), we now officially know the first match for TakeOver: Cardiff.
It’s a showdown that we’ve known was coming, we just didn’t know when. Kay Lee Ray won a battle royal on the June 19 episode which earned her a shot at Toni Storm’s NXT UK Women’s title. Ray’s been harboring a grudge ever since the champ failed to list her among the brand’s toughest competitors, and becoming #1 contender gave her an opening to show the Aussie the error of her ways...
.@Kay_Lee_Ray knows EXACTLY when she wants to challenge @tonistorm_ for the #NXTUK #WomensTitle... and that's at #NXTUKTakeOver: Cardiff! pic.twitter.com/gI0fGh9PoY

Even if they weren’t sharing the day with shows from competitors (and a big Rugby match between the Welsh and Irish national teams), NXT UK would likely be loading up the card for Cardiff. Their last live special was back in January, and since then WALTER’s won the United Kingdom title from Pete Dunne, and formed a faction with Alexander Wolfe, Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner - Imperium.
Those lads will all be getting announced for the show soon enough, I’m sure. Until then, is Storm vs. Ray a good start toward getting you to check out the show Saturday afternoon of Labor Day weekend?
