Will we ever learn what really happened backstage at WrestleMania 35, the last show (hopefully just for now) that Sasha Banks worked for WWE?
Time, and the ability/willingness of those involved to do shoot interviews, will tell. In the meantime, after anonymous sources came forward with a pro-company spin on how Banks and partner Bayley reacted to losing the Women’s Tag Team titles to The IIconics on April 7 shortly - but not immediately - after the show at MetLife Stadium, we’re now hearing alternative accounts.
As you’ll no doubt recall, the first version of the Boss ‘N’ Hug Connection’s post-loss response claimed they were “laying on the floor... loudly making it known they were unhappy”. Words like “temper tantrum” were never used by Pro Wrestling Sheet’s Ryan Satin or others who were given this account. But the implication the pair were being unprofessional was clear, and fans and industry observers picked up on it.
Those stories from unnamed persons were always a little suspect, seeing as there was photographic evidence that Banks & Bayley were doing things other than “laying on the floor... loudly making it known they were unhappy” after their match at ‘Mania.
Now, after her husband Sarath “Mikaze” Ton tweeted an unprompted message many interpreted as refuting the story given to Satin, IIconics Peyton Royce & Billie Kay addressed the rumors in an interview with the UK’s Express Sport.
Royce: “Immediately after the match we were all in tears, all crying. Just filled with emotion, we got pictures together which we then posted on our Instagram. I mean, I know there’s all these rumors going around and we didn’t see anything. Everyone was super happy and excited for us. The rumors to us is [that] we didn’t see anything that we’re hearing.”
Kay: “Yeah, we don’t really pay attention to rumors or social media and all that kind of stuff in that aspect. We had a great experience with them and it holds a really special place in our hearts. You can find them [pictures], we’re all embracing each other.”
The IIconics are obviously still with WWE, as they hold the Women’s Tag titles Sasha was allegedly surprised to learn she & Bayley were losing. Ton is also still working and traveling with the company as a designer. There are reasons for them to not address the situation at all, or to remain as cryptic about it as Banks herself. That they, and especially Peyton & Billie, chose to speak on it is worth noting.
Could it be a sign of the “stalemate” between Sasha & WWE is coming to an end? Or just another indication of the attitude which is reportedly pervasive backstage at The ‘E right now?
Stay tuned.
