The story of Lars Sullivan posting insensitive comments on a bodybuilding forum has been known for some time. Many of those comments were sexist, racist, homophobic, and all around hateful. The story had some legs just as he was about to debut, then he had some sort of reported anxiety issue, his debut was pushed back, and the story seemed to die down.
A reddit post brought it back into the forefront recently, and then a very public comment from Big E made it impossible for WWE to ignore.
So, they’ve released a statement on Lars’ behalf (via SI.com):
“There is no excuse for the inappropriate remarks that I made years ago. They do not reflect my personal beliefs nor who I am today, and I apologize to anyone I offended.”
That the apology was delivered through a statement from the company, and only after it was publicly brought up by a fellow wrestler within the company, makes it ring hollow. Sullivan has social media of his own. He very well could have met this head on and apologized for this himself.
Rumors and reports indicate WWE has no plans to halt his push over this, so it may not matter either way.
