The match
Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey vs. SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair vs. Royal Rumble Winner Becky Lynch in a winner takes all match in the main event of tonight’s (Sun., April 7, 2019) WrestleMania 35 pay-per-view (PPV) from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The story
I don’t even know where to start, and I’m not sure it really matters what brought us here. What matters is that we’re here, that WWE brought in Rousey for exactly this reason, that Flair has been fantastic for so long that it’s justified pushing her for her name, that Lynch has been a force of nature Vince McMahon simply couldn’t ignore. For all the talk of WWE ignoring what we want, the powers that be are giving it to us in the biggest spot they could.
Okay, yes, there is plenty of deserved criticism to go around with how they wrote the story to get here. Flair was shoehorned in, Lynch spent most of the build up to it limping around selling a knee injury, and Rousey has been screaming to the heavens that the entire business is fake and we’re all idiots for buying into it.
It’s a testament to how much interest there was in this that all of the above didn’t completely kill the match. Lynch is simply that beloved while Rousey has grown into a fantastic heel, even if the “wrestling is fake” stuff is lame and doesn’t really work. Flair, for her part, has been game to play the third wheel but has done such a great job there is obvious money in future Flair vs. Rousey and Flair vs. Lynch matches.
It’s also worth pointing out these three had arguably the greatest segment in the history of Monday Night Raw on the go home show:
That right there can reignite a man’s love for this here fake business.
What to expect
They’ve very clearly been building up to Lynch winning the Raw title from Rousey, and her history with Flair would make it equally satisfying to see her win the SmackDown title from her. What better way to close WrestleMania 35 than with the babyface winning the titles in the first ever women’s main event and the crowd going wild for it?
Vince McMahon has been known to throw a swerve out there every now and again, yes, but this makes too much sense to go against.
It’s almost time, folks.
Get ready.
