Rey Mysterio gets medically cleared on Saturday morning
Per Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, after much speculation, Rey Mysterio is good to go for Sunday.
“The Samoa Joe vs. Rey Mysterio match, the only scheduled match at WrestleMania 35 that was in jeopardy this week regarding injuries, is a go.
Sources in WWE confirmed this morning that the match is scheduled to happen tomorrow.”
The story so far
After two long years on the main roster, Samoa Joe finally won his first WWE branded title last month. Answering United States champion R-Truth’s open challenge, along with Mysterio and Andrade, Joe got the pin during a frantic fatal 4-way.
For Joe, capturing main roster gold was long overdue and hopefully a sign of bigger things to come.
The build to WrestleMania 35
Since winning the United States title, Joe has not done much with it. The 40-year-old was able to retain at Fastlane but was pinned by Mysterio during a tag match and lost to Kurt Angle on a recent episode of Raw.
A subplot on the road to WrestleMania has been Mysterio having his 22-year-old son Dominick corner him for the match. How long will it take before Joe tries to choke out young Dominick, before, during, or after his title defense versus Mysterio?
The go-home show
To his credit, Joe did dispatch of Ali on the final SmackDown before WrestleMania 35. The night before on Raw, Mysterio injured himself during a match with Baron Corbin.
Throughout the week, rumors and reports pointed to Mysterio nursing an injured ankle and his status for Sunday remained a question mark heading into the weekend. With the 44-year-old Lucha legend reportedly cleared, the question then becomes who needs a win more on Sunday night.
Will WWE choose to build Samoa Joe back up into a mega heel that has the potential to vault to the top of the card on SmackDown? Or with Rey Mysterio back in a full time role with the company, will the 30-year pro get one more WrestleMania moment/title run before his career comes to an end?
