Let’s guess who ‘the biggest acquisition in SmackDown history’ is gonna be

WWE.com

Never a company to shy away from hyperbole, WWE announced Vince McMahon will appear on SmackDown LIVE in Montreal tonight (April 16) to reveal “the biggest acquisition” in the brand’s history.

Considering this is a show built for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, where John Cena cut his teeth as a WWE Superstar, and which spent years as The Undertaker’s yard, that’s a bold claim. As such, speculation has really centered on two names.

Personally, I think it will be Brock Lesnar. Combine Mr. McMahon with the word “acquisition”, and it fits the Beast Incarnate’s prizefighter image. Throw in UFC President Dana White suddenly downplaying talk Lesnar will return to the Octagon, plus how attractive a Brock headlined show will be to Fox executives (especially since their rumored wish list Superstar, Ronda Rousey, won’t be back any time soon - if ever)... I wouldn’t be shocked to learn Vince threw millions at Paul Heyman’s client to get him to show up 10 times a year on Tuesdays/Fridays instead of Mondays.

The name most often mentioned in discussions I’ve seen/heard is Roman Reigns. The Big Dog is someone McMahon sees in the same light as Rocky, Cena and Taker - even if some of the most vocal members of his audience don’t. Promoting Reigns in this way won’t help him with his detractors, but that’s never stopped Vince before.

Outside of those two, other options feel like reaches. Seth Rollins seemed to be staying put on Team Red. Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair are already SmackDown roster members, so the “acquisition” tag doesn’t apply. WWE could strap a rocket to someone like NXT’s Matt Riddle, and his MMA background might make him someone they could sell to and on Fox. But the King of Bros doesn’t feel quite ready to be getting that kind of push from VKM. Or they may want to avoid the mistakes made when they promoted Drew McIntyre as a “chosen one” during his first run with the company.

We’ll find out in a few hours, and you can join us for the reveal in the live blog here. To pass the time though, vote in our poll below. And if you’re going with “Other” option, tell us who you’re thinking in the comments!
