Becky Lynch was worried she wouldn’t main event WrestleMania 35 after Kofi Kingston got hot

When Becky Lynch declared she would be challenging Ronda Rousey for the Raw women’s championship the night after she won the Royal Rumble, the feud was at its hottest. Lynch had clearly become one of the biggest stars in all of WWE, and a showdown opposite one of the other biggest stars looked like the clear main event of WrestleMania 35.

Then, they actually had to write a story to build to it. Along the way, they completely screwed it up, somehow adding Charlotte Flair into the mix and eventually cooling everyone down. At the same time, Kofi Kingston came out of nowhere on SmackDown Live, heating up at just the right time to become the challenger to Daniel Bryan and the WWE championship. The story they wrote for him was worlds better than what they came up with for the women’s triple threat.

There was fear, then, that the main event had slipped away, as Becky Lynch told The National:

“I was worried about it slipping away. Just because the build to the match had been so long that I was worried with Kofi heating up as much as he did, and them referring to several of the matches as the main event. Then I was like, ‘Oh, but are we the main event? But maybe they ... I mean, they really should, but maybe they won’t.’ Because you never know in this place, which is a great thing but also a bad thing and a terrifying thing, especially when you’re trying to achieve all of your dreams.”

Considering recent workplace situations involving WWE, those last comments hit a little harder today than they maybe would have even just one month ago. In the end, it matters not.

Vince McMahon did go ahead with the first ever women’s main event in WrestleMania history, and it delivered in a way most other main events didn’t. It was certainly better than any recent main event.
