Match Times

The 12 matches combined for a total time of 2h 26m 11s. This means that 45.1% of the show was devoted to bell-to-bell action. This is the 84th highest percentage in this category out of the 87 WWE pay-per-view (PPV) events in my data set, which begins with Royal Rumble 2013. The only events with a smaller percentage are WrestleMania 33, WrestleMania 34, and WrestleMania 31.

Here is the sorted list of match times for WrestleMania 35. This also includes where each match time ranks out of all 648 matches in my data set.

  • 24m 46s: Triple H vs. Batista (56th longest out of 648 matches)
  • 23m 45s: Daniel Bryan vs. Kofi Kingston (70th)
  • 21m 27s: Rousey vs. Flair vs. Lynch (112th)
  • 16m 12s: AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton (200th)
  • 15m 28s: The Miz vs. Shane McMahon (219th)
  • 10m 47s: Women’s tag championship Fatal 4-way (389th)
  • 10m 10s: Roman Reigns vs. Drew McIntyre (414th)
  • 10m 04s: SmackDown tag championship Fatal 4-way (416th)
  • 5m 59s: Kurt Angle vs. Baron Corbin (577th)
  • 4m 02s: Finn Balor vs. Bobby Lashley (610th)
  • 2m 31s: Brock Lesnar vs. Seth Rollins (624th)
  • 1m 00s: Samoa Joe vs. Rey Mysterio (635th)

Heading into WrestleMania 35, I wondered how WWE was going to cram 13 matches onto a 5 hour card. The answer was to move one of those matches to the pre-show (sorry, Revival), book four of the remaining 12 matches to run less than six minutes, and to extend the main card to almost 5.5 hours in length.

Six years ago I wrote about all the matches in WrestleMania history that surpassed 20 minutes in length. That was right before WrestleMania 29, and there were no women’s matches on that list.

Over the next six WrestleMania events, 14 more matches joined the 20-minute club. There was one mixed tag match in that group (Rousey’s match at WrestleMania 34), but the rest were all men’s matches.

There wasn’t even a women’s match on the main card at WrestleMania 29. WrestleMania 30 and WrestleMania 31 each included one women’s match that fell just short of 7 minutes in length.

Things finally started to change at WrestleMania 32, with a 16 minute triple threat match between Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, and Becky Lynch. WrestleMania 33 included two women’s matches on the main card that combined for a total length of roughly 18 minutes. The big championship match last year at WrestleMania 34 between Asuka and Charlotte Flair barely broke 13 minutes in length. Nia Jax and Alexa Bliss also had a 9 minute match on the main card last year.

Here were are six years later, and we finally have one. The first ever women’s main event in WrestleMania history also became the first ever women’s match in the history of the event to reach the 20 minute mark.

Pre-match Segments

The pre-match segments combined for a total time of 1h 38m 44s, which is 30.4% of the show. This is the 6th highest percentage in this category out of the 87 events in my data set.

Here is the sorted list of pre-match segment time for all 12 matches. For some context, keep in mind that the median pre-match segment time in my data set is 6m 05s and the average time is 6m 29s.

  • 14m 20s: Triple H vs. Batista
  • 14m 08s: Rousey vs. Flair vs. Lynch
  • 10m 09s: Daniel Bryan vs. Kofi Kingston
  • 9m 40s: Brock Lesnar vs. Seth Rollins
  • 8m 30s: The Miz vs. Shane McMahon
  • 8m 07s: Roman Reigns vs. Drew McIntyre
  • 7m 48s: SmackDown tag championship Fatal 4-way
  • 7m 06s: Women’s tag championship Fatal 4-way
  • 6m 01s: Finn Balor vs. Bobby Lashley
  • 4m 28s: AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton
  • 4m 14s: Samoa Joe vs. Rey Mysterio
  • 4m 13s: Kurt Angle vs. Baron Corbin

All the timing details on the pre-match superstar entrances as well as the pre-match hype video packages can be found here.

I started the clock for Lesnar’s pre-match segment as soon as Paul Heyman appeared on screen, even though Hulk Hogan’s theme music was still playing. Heyman’s appearance overlapped with the ending of the segment with Bliss and Hogan, and I decided to put all that Heyman screen time into the pre-match category.

Approximately 4m 29s lapsed between the time when Brock Lesnar initially struck Seth Rollins and when the bell actually rang to start the match, and this time all fell into the pre-show category. This pre-match assault was longer than their actual match time of 2m 31s.

The brief introductions for all of the special commentators (Lawler, Paige, Booker T, JBL, HBK) all counted as part of the pre-match segment time for those respective matches.

Post-match Segments

The post-match segments combined for a total time of 27m 51s, which is 8.6% of the show. This is the 49th highest percentage in this category out of the 87 events in my data set.

Here is the sorted list of the post-match segment time for all 12 matches. For some context, keep in mind that the median post-match segment time in my data set is 1m 59s and the average time is 2m 28s.

  • 4m 46s: Daniel Bryan vs. Kofi Kingston
  • 4m 05s: Kurt Angle vs. Baron Corbin
  • 3m 29s: Brock Lesnar vs. Seth Rollins
  • 2m 32s: Rousey vs. Flair vs. Lynch
  • 2m 16s: The Miz vs. Shane McMahon
  • 1m 52s: Roman Reigns vs. Drew McIntyre
  • 1m 51s: Women’s tag championship Fatal 4-way
  • 1m 35s: Triple H vs. Batista
  • 1m 26s: Samoa Joe vs. Rey Mysterio
  • 1m 25s: AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton
  • 1m 21s: Finn Balor vs. Bobby Lashley
  • 1m 13s: SmackDown tag championship Fatal 4-way

Miscellaneous Segments

That leaves about 15.9% (51m 30s) of the show for everything else. This is the 12th highest percentage in this category out of the 87 events in my data set.

Most of these miscellaneous segments are crammed into the time after one post-match segment ends and before the next pre-match segment begins. WrestleMania 35 included 12 different blocks of miscellaneous segments. Here is how long each block lasted, in chronological order:

  • Block 1: 12m 48s (America the Beautiful; Opening video; Bliss/Hogan)
  • Block 2: 0m 39s (Ad for WWE Shop)
  • Block 3: 2m 00s (Ads for Cricket Wireless & WWE 2K19; Lacey cameo)
  • Block 4: 8m 23s (HOF ceremony video recap & on-stage intros)
  • Block 5: 1m 26s (Ad for Money in the Bank; Ad for DAZN)
  • Block 6: 0m 59s (HMLA-773 in audience)
  • Block 7: 3m 22s (Superstars For Hope; Pre-show recap, SNL guys w/ Hall & Nash)
  • Block 8: 1m 27s (Ad for Stuber; filler commentary)
  • Block 9: 13m 56s (Ads for Money in the Bank & Snickers; Elias segment w/Cena)
  • Block 10: 0m 45s (Backstage with Bliss, B-Team, Simmons)
  • Block 11: 0m 39s (Ad for WWE Shop)
  • Block 12: 5m 06s (Attendance; Dance break; Ads for Miz and Mrs & WrestleMania 36)

Summary

The overall run time for WrestleMania 35 was 5h 24m 16s, and this is by far the longest out of all 87 events in my data set.

Here is a listing of how much total show time was allocated for each match when you add up all 3 components: pre-match time, match time, and post-match time. This list also includes where each total time ranks among the 648 entries in my data set.

  • 40m 41s: Triple H vs. Batista (41st longest out of 648 entries)
  • 38m 40s: Daniel Bryan vs. Kofi Kingston (52nd)
  • 38m 07s: Rousey vs. Flair vs. Lynch (57th)
  • 26m 14s: The Miz vs. Shane McMahon (204th)
  • 22m 05s: AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton (286th)
  • 20m 09s: Roman Reigns vs. Drew McIntyre (336th)
  • 19m 44s: Women’s tag championship Fatal 4-way (349th)
  • 19m 05s: SmackDown tag championship Fatal 4-way (366th)
  • 15m 40s: Brock Lesnar vs. Seth Rollins (466th)
  • 14m 17s: Kurt Angle vs. Baron Corbin (503rd)
  • 11m 24s: Finn Balor vs. Bobby Lashley (581st)
  • 6m 40s: Samoa Joe vs. Rey Mysterio (636th)

Now here is a look at the “Match Time Percentage” for each match. For any given match, this percentage shows how the match time compares to the combined pre-match and post-match segment time. For some context, it’s good to know that the median result here since 2013 is 61.8%.

(Here’s an example calculation: an entry with a match time of 6m 00s, pre-match time of 3m 00s, and a post-match time of 1m 00s has a score of 60.0%, because the match time of 6m 00s is 60% of the total sum of 10m 00s for all three components.)

  • 73.4%: AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton
  • 61.4%: Daniel Bryan vs. Kofi Kingston
  • 60.9%: Triple H vs. Batista
  • 59.0%: The Miz vs. Shane McMahon
  • 56.3%: Rousey vs. Flair vs. Lynch
  • 54.6%: Women’s tag championship Fatal 4-way
  • 52.8%: SmackDown tag championship Fatal 4-way
  • 50.5%: Roman Reigns vs. Drew McIntyre
  • 41.9%: Kurt Angle vs. Baron Corbin
  • 35.4%: Finn Balor vs. Bobby Lashley
  • 16.1%: Brock Lesnar vs. Seth Rollins
  • 15.0%: Samoa Joe vs. Rey Mysterio
