Sasha Banks & Bayley outlasted five other teams at Elimination Chamber earlier this evening (Sun., Feb. 17, 2019) in Houston to become the new WWE women’s tag team champions. They cried in the ring, because this is both a reall big deal more generally but maybe an even bigger deal to them personally.
Naturally, we got an interview with them backstage after and here’s what they had to say:
Banks: I don’t even know where to start. I feel like we’ve fought since we got signed. We’ve fought so much -- it’s not just these, we’ve fought for everything. Because we want to make a difference, we want to see change, and we see it happening. It’s happening before our eyes and it’s just so crazy that we get to be a part of it. We get to be a part of history, we get to be in the record books, and we get to be role models and idols to little girls and little boys. They can look up to us and say ‘because of Bayley and Sasha we can make a change too, we can make a difference, and we can take over the world.’ This, for me, is only the beginning. There is still so much more fighting that we have to do. This is a step, and we did it.
Bayley: I don’t know, it’s kind of hard to explain. I think, for me, there’s a lot. Now when girls watch this and they watch wrestling, if they’re watching with their best fried they can be like ‘dude, that could be us!’ Like, they could be tag team champions. They have something to work for together. They can dream together. I feel like that’s how we were since we met. It’s like ‘that could be us.’ We wanted to be on WrestleMania as little kids, and then we met, and things like that. That’s how I think... it’s like, the little girls on the couch being able to aspire for something so big and know that we for reals fought for this to make it special. Like she said out there tonight, not just for us, for them, for the people in the back but for the future for everybody. I don’t know, just so much... Doing it with her, I don’t even want to get too into it, but that’s for me what is really special because of everything that we’ve been through since we met each other. I don’t even know what to say. I started crying outside of the ring before I even jumped in the ring to hug her. Because I just felt weak. Like, everything just felt so warm and I just stayed in a little ball. Then I was like ‘I should probably go in there and hug her.’
Banks: I still feel like I’m going to throw up. It doesn’t feel real.
Sasha finishes up by telling Bayley she can’t do it without her and she would never want to, closing by saying “I love you.”
What a run.
