Daniel Bryan will challenge for the Universal championship at Royal Rumble

This week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown was built around a triple threat match that would determine who challenges Bray Wyatt for the Universal championship at Royal Rumble next month in Houston. WWE spent much of the evening teasing out whether or not Baron Corbin was even going to be involved in it, what with Roman Reigns running around trying to get revenge on him for various dog food attacks. He ultimately did get involved, but was run off by Reigns and missed the finish.

That was left to Daniel Bryan and The Miz, who had a perfectly acceptable match that ended exactly the way rumors suggested they would: Corbin was nowhere around, and Miz took the finish, submitting to Bryan.

That sets up Wyatt vs. Bryan in the match they were always building to at the second biggest pay-per-view of the year. Based on the post-match promo we got from the former, it sure seems like The Fiend will be the one working the match.

The updated Royal Rumble match card:

  • Men’s Royal Rumble
  • Women’s Royal Rumble
  • Bray Wyatt (c) vs. Daniel Bryan (Universal championship)
