A couple weeks back on his After The Bell podcast, Corey Graves offered a take on Charlotte Flair - both how WWE is using her and her recent performances. Flair sent some mixed signals about whether she agreed with Graves on social media, then joined him on the show to discuss the issue. She also seemed to share Corey’s frustrations about her booking, without coming straight out and saying it.
Charlotte’s father, the legendary Ric Flair, was more direct in addressing the topic on Wrestling Inc’s WINCLY podcast recently:
“I am not happy with the way they are doing it; I guess she’s been put in that role. Number one, I need to be left out of the equation because she has surpassed me in talent.
She’s never gonna be around for 40 years which is why I’m still a household name. I think they look at it and say, ‘Well, she’s like her dad. She’ll do anything we want her to do because she’s a pro.’
I don’t think she’ll ever be bored with her storylines and not participate at its fullest. That part is wrong on Corey’s part. But as far as her being the best athlete in the company, a Hall of Famer already, and being the biggest star of the women’s division, he’s spot on.”
Naitch went on to talk about the burden his legacy has put on Charlotte and how well she’s handled that. It also sounds like The Queen struggles with not being used by WWE at times:
“She’s made her own way and she’s made it by going through such a rigorous and demanding schedule because of my last name... She wouldn’t have it any other way. What happens is sometimes they’ll leave her off of something and she’ll go, ‘Hey dad, why did they leave me off?’ I tell her just to have a day off. That’s how she’s geared and she wants to be the best every damn minute.”
Given that the younger Flair remains a fixture on television and prominent in programs involving championships, it’s not quite clear to me what the complaint is. I guess Corey and Ric want more.
Which is fine... everybody’s got their favorites, and it would be weird if The Nature Boy wasn’t repping his daughter (and it’s nice someone is still talking about how something isn’t fair to Flair).
But there’s not really another woman on Raw or SmackDown getting more time than her. I mean, who do they think Charlotte is? Baron Corbin?
