No Holds Barred, No Disqualification match for the WWE championship
Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Rey Mysterio
Brock Lesnar is a sadistic bully who mercilessly assaulted Rey Mysterio’s son Dominik with a trip to Suplex City at the end of September.
Conveniently enough, it turns out that Dominik’s godfather is Cain Velasquez, the mixed martial artist who scarred and humiliated Lesnar in a UFC championship match back in 2010. Mysterio summoned Velasquez to join WWE and confront Lesnar on SmackDown’s Fox debut in early October, signaling the end of Kofi Kingston’s relevance in the WWE championship picture. Velasquez got in the ring and dominated Brock with strike after strike. It looked like Lesnar really stepped into it this time, and finally met his match.
Oh wait, nevermind. The Beast conquered Velasquez in about two minutes in Saudi Arabia at Crown Jewel. So much for that master plan, huh? In some ways this match felt like the infamous rematch that Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior had in WCW at Halloween Havoc in 1998, where the match was always going to be awful, but it solely existed to give a win back to the big star who suffered a memorable defeat nearly a decade earlier. At least the Lesnar/Velasquez rematch didn’t go 15 minutes nor did it include a botched fireball ending, so it could have actually been much worse.
After Velasquez tapped out, Rey Mysterio entered the ring and beat the hell out of Brock Lesnar with a steel chair, to the point where Lesnar had to run away from him. Mysterio vowed to make Lesnar pay for what he did to his son, even if it takes his very last breath to do it.
Lesnar was fuming and decided that he would hunt Rey Mysterio down as punishment the following week. But Mysterio was a Raw superstar and Lesnar was a SmackDown superstar, thanks to the very rigid rules of the WWE Draft that occurred just a few weeks earlier, so there was a logistical problem keeping both men apart. Lesnar decided to solve that logistical problem by quitting SmackDown and joining the Raw roster. I guess Paul Heyman and his client didn’t get the memo about how most superstars in the company, including NXT, would be crossing brands at will throughout the month of November.
So Lesnar appeared on the Nov. 4 edition of Raw, fully prepared to end the existence of Rey Mysterio. Commentator Dio Maddin became one of Brock’s victims during an uncontrollable bout of rage, and that’s when Mysterio appeared out of nowhere to ambush Lesnar’s knees with a steel pipe. Brock never saw it coming.
Mysterio once again put a vicious beating on Brock, leaving the Beast to limp away like a wounded animal.
Afterwards, Rey cut a fire promo explaining that this is what happens when you mess with his family. Rey was now coming for what’s most important to Brock, the WWE championship. Even though it’s pretty clear that the WWE championship is not the most important thing to Brock, the match was made for Survivor Series.
Lesnar didn’t appear on either the Nov. 11 or the Nov. 18 episodes of Raw, because you know, part-timer status and all. But Paul Heyman made an appearance, and he added a No Holds Barred stipulation to the match. Mysterio said he’ll gladly bring his pipe with him to Chicago. There’s no word yet letting us know if this No Holds Barred match can come to an end due to Match Stoppage.
So that’s where things stand in this feud with Survivor Series just a few hours away. We’re going to witness either a miracle victory for Rey Mysterio, or a violent massacre at the hands of Brock Lesnar.
