Mae Young Classic results, live blog (Sept. 26, 2018): Io Shirai’s WWE debut

Here's a place to follow along with the action and comment on the fourth episode of the 2018 Mae Young Classic (MYC) Women’s Tournament during its premiere, Weds., Sept. 26 at 9PM Eastern time on WWE Network.

Round one action concludes tonight, headlined by the long-awaited WWE television debut of Io Shirai. Considered one of the best wrestlers in the world, Shirai was suppoed to debut in the 2017 MYC until an injury kept her from being cleared. She’s gotten a clean bill of health this time around, and will 19 year old legacy Xia Brookside on this episode.

A Japanese veteran with a different style, “Lady Godzilla” Hiroyo Matsumoto, will face another legacy wrestler - Rachel Evers, who also featured in last year’s tourney. NXT’s Taynara Conti is also back for her second classic; she’ll face collegiate volleyballer turned nerdy wrestler Jessie Elaban. And another woman many thought they’d never see in a WWE ring, indie legend Nicole Matthews, will square off against NXT UK’s Isla Dawn.

You can also check out a complete bracket for the entire tournament here. Stella Cheeks will be along with a review of the episode a little later.

The show opens with a hype reel running tonight’s set of the last four first round matchups down.

Thence into the intro video.

Commentary welcomes us to the show and tosses to the obligatory video package for our first match, Hiroyo Matsumoto vs. Rachel Evers.

We see Kassius Ohno in the front row during introductions.

Hiroyo Matsumoto vs. Rachel Evers

Collar and elbow, testing their strength against one another, down to their knees in the grit of it, and finally they stalemate and break. Off the ropes, criss-cross, shoulder blocks but neither woman is moved! Lariats for the same effect and finally Matsumoto lands the shoulder block and takes Evers off her feet! Drop toehold in response, basement dropkick, only two!

Looking for a gutwrench, blocked at first, clubbing blows and Rachel gets the Karelin lift! To the apron, Hiroyo snaps her neck over the top rope and follows it up with a missile dropkick that rings out across Full Sail... NOPE! Hairpull biel, a snapmare, overhead elbow into a rear chinlock with a knee to the spine. Backing Evers into the corner with chops on the break, a shove, lining her up, catching the boot, Matsumoto sets her on the second and stomps away!

Fired up, charging knee, climbing the turnbuckles... slingshot double knee drop can’t put Rachel Evers away! Drawing her up, looking for the Rock Drop, Evers countering with elbows, duck the lariat, and a thrust spinebuster connects! Both women down and out, slowly rising to their feet whereupon they trade forearms with vigor! HUGE wind-up punch from Hiroyo but Rachel cracks her with a boot when she comes off the ropes!

Neckbreaker connects, running senton... NOT ENOUGH! Powerbomb lift countered to a back body drop, sidestep the charge, Evers hits an STO, slingshot corkscrew leg drop... STILL NO! Right hands, trying to cauliflower Matsumoto’s ear, Hiroyo fires back with a strike rush but gets caught again, off the ropes, jockeying for position... LARIAT BUT RACHEL WILL NOT STAY DOWN!

Looking to follow it up, but Evers thinks fast, small package, only two, Matsumoto with a German suplex but Rachel rises to her feet! Kick blocks the right-hand lariat but Hiroyo wallops her with the left! Calling for it, countered with a back body drop but Matsumoto rolls through... DEADLIFT POWERBOMB!

Hiroyo Matsumoto wins by pinfall with the Rock Drop.

Video package for Jessie Elaban vs. Taynara Conti follows.

Dana Brooke is shown in the front row.

Jessie Elaban vs. Taynara Conti

Circling, test of strength, Conti with a judo throw, another one, and she poses. Waistlock applied, standing switch, again, back elbow breaks Elaban free and a Scorpion kick follows. Kick, giant step, senton, only one! Sidestep the Stinger splash, wrenching Jessie’s arm over the top rope, countering a lariat into an STO for two! Repeated covers don’t do the trick so she grabs a top wristlock instead.

Rolling through into a Fujiwara armbar, wrenching her wrist back for maximum leverage, Elaban reaching, trembling, and she manages to reverse to a pin. Forearms to the face get Taynara hot, front kick, armbar, using the tape on the rope to scrape the web between thumb and forefinger! Stomping away, double leg, Jessie struggling so Conti kicks her arm out from under her!

A second arm kick hits the ropes hard and Elaban hits a catapult facebuster to get some separation! Dropkicks ensue, charging forearm, another one in the corner, axe kick gets a nearfall! Jockeying for position...

Taynara Conti wins by pinfall with what is essentially a Black Hole Slam that Michael Cole has some proper judo name for that I don’t quite catch.

Video package for Isla Dawn vs. Nicole Matthews follows.

Isla Dawn vs. Nicole Matthews

Circling, collar and elbow, Matthews pushing Dawn into the corner and breaking with a pat on the head. Collar and elbow, Isla backs Nicole into the corner this time and breaks with a condescending pat of her own. Back to the lockup, Dawn with a wristlock but Matthews takes her down to the mat. Drop toehold into a double stomp, axe kick, chest kicks, Isla running hot, off the ropes with a basement Meteora... NOPE!

Nicole sidesteps the charge, neckbreaker hung off the second rope gets a two count and she follows it up with kicks to the spine. Whip across into a backbreaker and a backbreaker hold with an overhand chop to the collarbone! Isla throwing desperate forearms, Matthews returning in kind, big chop across the throat, but Dawn sidesteps the charge.

Combat rolls into uppercuts, Nicole cuts the second off and freight trains her for two. Hanging her up in the ropes, chest kicks follow, jawing at her, telling her she’s not taking her spot, into the cover... only a nearfall! Overhead elbows into a kneeling surfboard, Isla fights to her feet only to get dropped with a knee. More jawing, Dawn answers only with forearms!

Shove off, kicks ensue, trying to take Matthews’ legs out from under her and she follows that with a running knee to the face! Whip denied, Nicole hanging in the ropes until Isla kicks her arm out and suplexes her. Enzuigiri connects, fisherman suplex... ONLY TWO! Whip, catch the boot, rolling elbow sets her up, suplex reversed to a short forearm, Samoan drop... STILL NO!

Half nelson suplex blocked but a jumping knee lands true, Dawn off the ropes and Matthews clocks her with a lariat! Double leg, rolling her over... LIONTAMER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RING! IT’S OVER!

Nicole Matthews wins by submission with a Liontamer.

Video package for Io Shirai vs. Xia Brookside follows.

Robbie Brookside is shown at ringside during Xia’s entrance, and father and daughter hug. Kairi Sane is shown in the crowd for Io’s entrance.

Io Shirai vs. Xia Brookside

Brookside taking it to her with forearms at the jump, whip reversed, flying headscissors but Shirai lands on her feet! Xia charges into a boot, gets thrown into the corner, charging elbow follows, right hand, crumpling Brookside to the mat where Io puts boots to her! Fired up, dragging her to the middle of the ring for the cover, only two!

Countering a right hand into a bulldog and locking the arm-trap crossface on, Xia fights to her feet, snapmare and a knee and Shirai remains in control. Bidding Brookside to rise, underhooks, shoved off, jawbreaker connects, off the ropes, facebuster connects! Xia’s turn to bid her to rise, Io ducks a roundhouse kick... SHOTEI! Fired up, charging in, double knees connect!

Giant step, Shirai pops up top and calls for it...

Io Shirai wins by pinfall with the moonsault.

Io and Xia hug and shake hands post-match.

Commentary hypes up Shirai vs. Zeuxis for the second round.

We get a hype reel recapping tonight’s matches.

That’s the show, folks.
