Mae Young Classic results, live blog (Sept. 19, 2018): Mia Yim vs. Allysin Kay

New, comments

Here's a place to follow along with the action and comment on the third episode of the 2018 Mae Young Classic (MYC) Women’s Tournament during its premiere, Weds., Sept. 19 at 9PM Eastern time on WWE Network.

Round one action continues tonight, headlined by a showdown which has spanned multiple promotions as Mia Yim faces Allysin Kay. Yim was a standout in the 2017 MYC and while Kay is new to WWE, she’s been atop a televised promotion as Impact Knockouts champ Sienna. Impact is just one of the places these two women have squared off in a rivalry which goes back six years.

Another wrestler who made a name for herself in last year’s tourney will be squaring off with a familiar foe on this episode when Toni Storm and Jinny bring a feud fans of Progress know well to WWE Network. We’ll also see the return of former Divas champ Kaitlyn when she battles international YouTube sensation Kavita Devi, and China’s Xia Li against Karen Q.

You can also check out a complete bracket for the entire tournament here. Stella Cheeks will be along with a review of the episode a little later.

NOTE: Spoilers are out there for these pre-taped broadcasts (including here), but many Cagesiders don't partake. If you are going to post or discuss spoilers for this show before they happen, or results of future shows, please use the spoiler bar in your comment.

Enjoy the show!

She was seaside sittin’, just a smokin’ and a drinkin’ on ringside, on top of the world. She had her drink in her hand; she had her toes in the sand and whoa, what a beautiful girl. What a sweet talkin’ honey with a little bit of money can turn your head around, but me, I’ve little in the way of such wiles and I’m just here to liveblog this here pro wrestling show, folks.

The show opens with a recap of last week’s show and a breakdown of this week’s matches.

Thence into the intro video for the show.

We get our obligatory video package for Kaitlyn vs. Kavita Devi, our first match of the evening.

Kaitlyn vs. Kavita Devi

Collar and elbow, struggling against each other and Devi knocks Kaitlyn to the mat! Back to the lockup, into the corner, along the ropes, struggling, referee Darryl Sharma orders a break and Kavita grabs a headlock. Snapmare to escape, off the ropes, sliding lariat, a trifecta of leg drops from the former Divas Champion but she can’t put Devi away that easily.

Kavita with an STO backbreaker / STO combination, off the ropes, back elbow gets a nearfall, scoop and a slam, again only two. Off the ropes, kick to the back, stepover armbar, almost a variation of Stranglehold Gamma applied but Kaitlyn manages to escape with an arm drag. Devi right under her, fireman’s carry, escape with elbows, into the ropes, duck a lariat, pasting the Indian superstar with forearms!

Off the ropes, shoulder block, whip into a back elbow, scoop and a slam, dropkick, cannonball in the corner, fired up...

Kaitlyn wins by pinfall with the spear.

Jinny vs. Toni Storm is next on deck, with requisite video package.

We see Tyler Breeze and the Iconic Duo in the front row.

Jinny vs. Toni Storm

Collar and elbow, a break, back at it, struggle into the ropes and we’ve got a shoving match! Jinny falls to the mat, back to the lockup, she’s got control now, taking Storm down and backing her into the corner for another break. Again to the lockup, side headlock from the fashionista, Toni with a wristlock, a kick combo, running knee in the corner but Jinny gets in the ropes and referee Drake Wuertz blocks the followup.

Jinny with a reverse STO into the turnbuckles... NOPE! Stomping away, drawing her up, snapmare into a kick to the back gets another nearfall! Half nelson chinlock applied, Storm out with body blows, Jinny cracks her across the face with a forearm and counters a charge into an overhead arm drag in the corner for another nearfall! Back to the half nelson chinlock, wrenching it in, Toni breaks, jockeying for position into a cradle, only two.

Another huge forearm, leg-pick into an reverse surfboard! Adding kicks to the back of the head as Storm struggles, crawling for the ropes... SHE’S GOT THE BREAK! Hammerfists from Jinny keep her down, screaming at her, slap across the face, smashing her face into the turnbuckles, hard whip, boot up on the charge! Up and over, go-behind, German suplex puts the fashionista down and out in the corner for the hip attack!

Underhooks, struggling...

Toni Storm wins by pinfall with a Tiger Driver.

Commentary takes a look at the bracket before throwing to our video package for Karen Q vs. Xia Li

Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae are shown in the crowd.

Karen Q vs. Xia Li

Probing away with strikes, Li catches a kick, sweeps Q’s legs out from under her but Karen kips right back up! They bow and Q slaps the taste out of Xia’s mouth! Fired up, Li charges in, rush of palm strikes but Karen blasts her out of the corner with a kick to the face! Mounted punches, another mocking bow, Q draws her up and puts her face into the turnbuckles, cartwheel handspring elbow, another forearm, a Yakuza kick and then the exploder suplex... NOPE!

Li blocks a suplex but Karen is right on her with a full nelson slam for two! Cravate applied, Xia escapes, back and forth with kicks, crescent kick lands true after a roundhouse misses... NO GOOD! Samoan drop, Q heads up top to folow, frog splash... NOBODY HOME! Li fired up, falling corkscrew roundhouse kick ala Will Ospreay’s Robinson Special... IT’S OVER!

Xia Li wins by pinfall with a falling corkscrew roundhouse kick.

As always, a video package for our last match, Allysin Kay vs. Mia Yim, follows.

We see Sonya Deville in the crowd, followed shortly thereafter by Mia’s biggest fan, Shelton Benjamin.

Allysin Kay vs. Mia Yim

Collar and elbow, Kay backs Yim into the ropes and they struggle a moment before breaking in the middle of the ring and switching to Frye/Takayama punches! Mia with a takedown into mounted punches, Allysin turns it around, back and forth again they go until Yim turns it into an armbar! AK in the ropes for the break, hammered against them with strikes, whip across, Mia baits her into being low-bridged and nails her with a kick off the apron!

Back inside, more mounted punches get a cover that’s only good for one! Waistlock, standing switch, off the ropes... POUNCE! Yim rolls to the floor, Kay heads out after her, big chop against the apron, pinkies up but Mia is right back at her trading chops! In the ring, off the ropes, suicide dive onto the ramp! Allysin ducks a chop and Yim’s hand goes hard into the post!

Working the injured hand, Hot Shot into the apron, back inside the cover gets two! Throwing Mia into the corner, AK puts boots to her before fishhooking her with her pinkie finger against the bottom rope! Kick to the ribs, choking her with her own hair and referee DA Brewer forces the break! Scoop, fallaway slam, Kay follows it up with a standing neck crank but Yim escapes and hits a flying armbar!

AK keeps her hands clasped and posts to her feet... DEADLIFT POWERBOMB ONLY GETS ONE! Disdainful kicks and shoves, screaming at her to get up, and Mia picks the legs into a kneebar but Allysin’s too close to the ropes! Forehead to forehead, into a shoving match, forearm for forearm, big slap into a knee but Kay comes off the ropes with a pump kick and both women are down and out!

Mia recovers first, off the ropes for a trifecta of dropkicks, up to the second, missile dropkick finds the mark... NO GOOD! Looking for the package piledriver, countered with a back body drop and AK follows it up with the lift into the Gory Special... REVERSED TO A YOSHI TONIC BUT KAY ISN’T STAYING DOWN YET! Chop, arm wringer, inverted stomp facebreaker blocked, off the ropes... BIG D CONNECTS BUT SHE TAKES TOO LONG TO MAKE THE COVER AND YIM KICKS OUT!

Both women connect with kicks at the same time and end up down and out! Jockeying for position in the corner as they recover... SOLE FOOD OUT OF THE CORNER! IT’S OVER!

Mia Yim wins by pinfall with Sole Food.

Commentary takes a look at the bracket and hypes the conclusion to round one next week.
