WWE HELL IN A CELL LIVE BLOG & MATCH COVERAGE
I was born on the cemetery, under the sign of the moon. Raised from my grave by the dead, I was made a mercenary in the legions of hell. Now I’m here to liveblog this here pro wrestling show for you, folks.
The preshow begins with our new host Jonathan Coachman welcoming us to the show and introducing his panel, today consisting of Paige, Booker T, and Peter Rosenberg. They run the card down in short for a bit of hype before moving onto a video package and in-depth discussion for Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte Flair. Next up on the docket is the mixed tag between the American Dragon and Brie Bella on one hand and the It Couple on the other.
We go backstage for an interview with Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins ahead of their tag title match. Dean says nothing changes tonight, and Drew and Dolph will just realize what everyone knows, and Seth brings up the idea that the Shield might end the night with all of the Raw men’s gold, but they’re workhorses and this is just another chance to prove it.
Video package and panel discussion for Jeff Hardy vs. Randy Orton follows, and Paige announces that match will kick the main show off. AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe is the next up for the standard treatment. Alexa Bliss vs. Ronda Rousey follows, and Bliss joins the panel by satellite from backstage. She vows to take the title back and even her fans don’t think she has a chance, but Ronda’s not at 100% tonight.
Alexa question’s Paige’s right to ask a question because she’s not Raw talent, but says all the headlines will read “Ronda Rousey fails” tonight. She bails before David Otunga (who replaced Booker T at some point) can actually ask his question, and panel discussion follows. Next on the docket is... Triple H vs. the Undertaker in Australia, because I guess we need to promote that match at all times lest we forget it’s happening.
New Day make their entrance and get on mic. Xavier Woods says the kids are back in school, Big E talks about how the leaves start to fall, and Kofi Kingston says he doesn’t care how basic you think it is, but it’s pumpkin spice latte season, baby! And that means your boys the New Day are once again, for the fourth time in a row, defending their WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship.
But not against any old team, oh no, tonight they defend against Rusev Day, and in honor of their illustrious opponents, they wrote a song to sing--
Enter Aiden English. He and New Day have a throat-clearing contest, and then English sings his intro, being cut off when he asks rhetorically mid-song who will be champs when all is said and done.
New Day (Big E & Kofi Kingston) (c) vs. Rusev Day (Aiden English & Rusev) (WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship)
English and Kingston to start, Aiden right off with a monkey flip, Kofi lands on his feet, Trevor Lee double stomp... NOPE! Tag to Rusev, he catches a kick and hosses Kingston into the corner, whip across, up and over, duck a lariat, springboard crossbody... THE BULGARIAN CATCHES HIM! Knees to the rib feed a fallaway slam, only a nearfall, tag back to English.
Working Kofi over in the corner, quick tag, Rusev drops him with a lariat before standing between him and his corner. Suffocating him with a front chancery on the mat, Kingston posts to his feet and out but Rusev backs him into the corner with right hands. Setting him up top, jockeying for position, clubbing him down, tornado DDT connects and both men are down and out!
Tags made, E in hot with the trifecta of belly-to-belly suplexes! Fired up, tongue out, hip swivel, off the ropes, big splash but Big charges into an uppercut and Rusev tags in. Buzzsaw roundhouse takes E’s head off, off the ropes for the Shinjiro Ohtani spinning wheel kick! Fending Kofi off, he lands another roundhouse kick but Big kicks out! Tuning up the band, E sidesteps the Machka Kick, and fights out of a takedown.
Blind tag, Big with the suicide spear, English off the ropes... TOPE CON GIRO! Back in, Aiden hits an inverted DDT for a nearfall before heading up top, senton atomico... NOBODY HOME! Kingston blind tag, E with a powerbomb lift... POWERBOMB / DIVING DOUBLE STOMP COMBINATION CAN’T PUT ENGLISH AWAY! Kofi fired up, Trouble in Paradise caught, fireman’s carry escaped, O’Connor roll but Rusev with the tag and he tries to dump Kingston to the floor but only Rusev tumbles over.
Off the ropes, E in position, alley oop... RUSEV SNIPES HIM OUT OF MIDAIR WITH THE MACHKA KICK! Rolling Kofi back in, but English makes the tag and directs traffic, diving headbutt... NOBODY HOME! Diving splash from Aiden connects... BUT CAN’T PUT HIM AWAY! Reaching for the tag but Rusev is down on the floor, so English takes matters into his own hands... HE’S GOT THE ACCOLADE IN!
E tries to break it up, the Bulgarian Lion slips in for a Machka Kick to block the save! Kofi struggles and puts him into the ropes for the break! Kingston passes Rusev to the floor and catches English...
New Day win by pinfall with Trouble in Paradise from Kofi Kingston on Aiden English to retain the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship.
Rusev Day bicker after the match as New Day celebrate.
The panel (now rejoined by Booker T) discuss the match we just saw before running the card down in short one more time. Mick Foley is interviewed backstage and says he’s got the best seat in the house for the Universal Championship match tonight before Baron Corbin rolls up. He says he’s pulling out all the stops for his first pay-per-view as acting general manager and Foley offers him some tips but Corbin waves him off.
Video package and panel discussion of the Universal Championship match concludes the preshow.
The main show begins with a video package built around the idea of our personal demons and how they’ve shaped the matches that will be happening tonight.
Jeff Hardy vs. Randy Orton (Hell in a Cell Match)
Hardy right out the gates with a Stinger Splash, repeated shoulder thrusts but Orton fires back with overhand clubs and a front kick. Uppercut in the ropes, Jeff spills to the apron, Randy snaps his neck over the top rope and blasts him off the apron and into the cage wall! Drawing him up on the floor, the Viper tries to smash his face into the cage but the Charismatic Enigma blocks.
Successful in smashing Orton into the cell, into the post, into the apron, absolutely having his way with him! Hardy heads under the ring for some plunder but when he goes to slide the table in the ring Randy yanks it away from him and takes the momentum back. Rolling him inside, the Viper hesitates maneuvering the table and Jeff kicks it into him, sandwiching the Legend Killer against the steel!
Back under the ring for more plunder, Brother Nero pulls a stubby ladder out and rams it into Randy’s midsection repeatedly! Orton recovers, waffling Jeff across the back with a chair and grabbing him by the hair to throw him into the cage wall! Uppercuts follow, he sets the chair up on the floor, looking for a running start on the RKO but Jeff throws him off and hits Poetry in Motion off the chair!
Double axehandle follows, Hardy does some hardcore feng shui before rolling the Apex Predator back in, kick to the gut caught, shotgun dropkick into Hardyac Arrest! Cover comes up empty, headed up top but Orton cuts him off with a forearm. Right hands, climbing up after him... AND RANDY HITS HIS BEAUTIFUL SUPERPLEX! Both men down and out, Jeff drags himself up the ropes and gets an elbow up on the charge... WHISPER IN THE WIND CAN’T PUT ORTON AWAY!
Rolling to the floor, the Charismatic Enigma goes back under the ring and retrieves a full-sized ladder this time and opens it upside down on the floor. Clubbing at Orton, pulling him out, suplex into the ladder blocked! ORTON GOURDBUSTERS HARDY INTO THE INVERTED LADDER! Back in, the cover gets two and Randy heads back to the floor himself for some plunder, coming up with a chair.
Stalking his prey, waffling him across the back, jawing at him, ripping his mesh shirt off for direct steel on flesh contact! He’s got Jeff’s belt in hand and whips him with it! Cover made, again only two, scraping the laces of his boots across Hardy’s face to follow! A look of disgust crosses the Viper’s face as the crowd chants for his opponent before locking a ladder open on its side and closing it best he can over Hardy’s throat!
Stomping away, taking his time with the Garvin Stomp, rolling him out of the ladder... NOPE! Folling it up with a reverse chinlock, Hardy gets to his feet and breaks with punches, whip reversed, big lariat connects! Manhattan Drop to the double leg drop to the basement dropkick... ONLY TWO! “Delete!” hands, waiting for Orton to rise, front kick, Twist of Fate blocked, off the ropes and he gets caught by the snap scoop powerslam for two!
Randy goes under the ring for plunder again and dumps a toolbox out, selecting a long-shafted screwdriver as his weapon of choice. He traps Jeff’s arms, moves his hair away from his ear and again begins stretching his gauge hole with a finger! OH GOD HE’S PUTTING THE SCREWDRIVER THROUGH THE HOLE AND TWISTING IT! JEFF HARDY’S EAR IS A TWISTED KNOT OF FLESH MY GOD!
HARDY BREAKS WITH A LOW BLOW AND GETS AWAY BEFORE HIS DAMN EAR GETS TORN OPEN! HE’S WHIPPING ORTON WITH HIS BELT WITH A RIGHTEOUS FURY! THE CHAIR FINDS ITS MARK ACROSS RANDY’S BACK REPEATEDLY, DEFORMING TO THE ARC OF HIS FLESH! Cover gets two, Jeff heads up top but Orton cuts him off by bumping into the rope and gets him in place on the apron and hits the rope-hung DDT as blood streams down his back from the chair shots!
The Viper goes to that special place, pounding the mat and waiting for Hardy to rise and turn but the RKO is blocked, kick to the gut... TWIST OF FATE! Smashing the chair back into shape, he lays it across Orton and climbs... SWANTON BOMB ONTO THE CHAIR BUT RANDY FINDS THE WILL TO KICK OUT! Orton rolls away, bleeding from the thigh now as well, as the Charismatic Enigma goes under the ring for more plunder.
He gets a ladder and another table and begins building an ultraviolent contraption, setting the big ladder up next to the small one and the table on the other side of the big ladder. Twist of Fate to set him up, he lays Randy on the table before climbing the small ladder. He thinks about just leapfrogging the big one and instead climbs it, he’s hanging off the top of the cell!
HARDY MONKEY BARS OVER AND SWINGS... DIVING SPLASH THROUGH THE TABLE BUT ORTON ROLLED AWAY! Referee Brian Nguyen warns Orton off, telling him Jeff is hurt, but the Viper insists on being allowed to make the cover...
Randy Orton wins by pinfall with a lateral press.
Medics rush down with a stretcher and tend to Hardy, strapping a neck brace on him before loading him onto the board and then the stretcher in turn.
House ads for Super Show-Down (centered around Triple H vs. Undertaker) and Total Divas follow.
Backstage, AJ Styles is interviewed. He says if Samoa Joe wants to talk about his family, he can’t wait for this match to start and he’s laser-focused for the talking to end and the fighting to start. He’s walking in as champion, ripping Joe’s heart out of his chest, and walking out as champion, because this right here is the House That AJ Styles Built.
Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte Flair (c) (WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship)
Circling, Lynch with a go-behind, waistlock takedown, into a front chancery, gator roll, Flair posts to her feeet, waistlock into a takedown of her own and she likewise locks a front chancery on into the gator roll. Shot off, shoulder block, drop down, leapfrog, rolling leg pick into the spinning toehold but Becky reverses. Looking for Dis-Arm-Her, she can’t get it so she grabs a top wristlock instead! Pushing her to the mat, Charlotte slings her off, again picking the leg and this time hitting a stepover toehold knee drop into a legscissors toehold. Lynch tries to roll her off but Flair blocks so she nails her with a few kicks to force the break.
Front kick, pushing Charlotte into the corner, admonished by referee Jason Ayers and Flair follows with shoulder thrusts. Becky dodges one, knocks the champion to the floor with a kick and hits a diving forearm off the apron! Back inside, lateral press gets two, arm wringer to follow, spinning armlock into the Ode to Jim Breaks... SHE FALLS BACK TO TRY AND BREAK FLAIR’S ARM!
To the apron, jockeying for position, schoolboy gets two and Lynch gets two in return off a forearm before going back to the top wristlock. Shift to a hammerlock... SHE FLOATS OVER, BRIDGING HAMMERLOCK! Keeping it on, returning to the normal hammerlock, Charlotte posts to her feet and hits elbows to break. Becky floats over her exploder suplex but gets pasted with a chop!
Lariat knocks Flair down and gets two, off the ropes with a leg drop, elbow drop, but the turning leg drop comes up empty and the champ hits the knee drop to the back of the neck! Up and over to the apron, slugging it out, armbreaker over the top rope leaves Charlotte clutching her arm! Kicking Lynch off the apron, baseball slide, back on the apron, going forearm for body blow and Becky hits an arm wringer on the apron!
Cover gets two, Dis-Arm-Her attempt countered into a pin for two and Flair hits a back suplex for separation but her arm is still in agony as she holds it close to her body. Uppercuts follow, caught into a backslide, only one and she follows with chops. Whip denied, rolling solebutt, Dis-Arm-Her blocked before the takedown, jockeying for position in the corner and the champion explodes out with a big boot!
Both women down and out, Charlotte can’t capitalize but instead climbs up top... NOBODY HOME ON THE MOONSAULT! CROSS ARMBAR APPLIED! Shift to a triangle as Flair tries to make it a pin, she deadlifts... SITOUT POWERBOMB CAN’T PUT BECKY LYNCH AWAY! On their knees, slugging it out forearm for forearm as they rise to their feet, and Becky pulls ahead in the exchange... HAMMERLOCK INVERTED DDT FOR A NEARFALL!
Headed up top but Flair catches her missile dropkick into a Boston Crab! Lynch crawls into the ropes and puts Charlotte into the turnbuckles before yanking her shoulder-first into the post! Drawing her up, counter to a schoolboy... DIS-ARM-HER IS IN ON THE KICKOUT BUT CHARLOTTE’S TOO CLOSE TO THE ROPES! BECKY REFUSES TO BREAK UNTIL FOUR!
Back inside, elbow up, spear countered...
Becky Lynch wins by pinfall countering the spear into a pin to win the WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship!

Commentary has a word of support for everyone affected by Hurricane Florence.
We get a recap of Styles/Joe and go backstage with an apoplectic Samoa Joe yelling at referee Brian Nguyen and demanding Paige explain how he still has a job. She tells Brian he can leave and Joe that he needs to calm down and stop interrupting her. The referee’s decision is final, but he’ll get his rematch in Australia in three weeks. Joe says that’s ridiculous and he should be champion right now, but if she doesn’t change the rules of the battlefield, he won’t be responsible, and he wants no disqualification.
She agrees and says there has to be a winner, and he says there will be.
Commentary hypes up the rest of the Super Show-Down card as a way to shill for the WWE Network.
