There are 13 matches scheduled for tonight’s (Sun., Aug. 19, 2018) SummerSlam pay-per-view from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, and for the first time since 2003, none of those matches will feature John Cena. This is just the latest sign that he is indeed being phased out, moving on to other projects outside of WWE.
The man himself with a message:
First time in 15 years I have not been able to be a part of @WWE #SummerSlam. I am beyond grateful to @EyeOfJackieChan but truly miss the @WWEUniverse. Wishing all Superstars luck and safety! My time isn’t quite up, but #YourTimeIsNow! #CarpeDiem

His next scheduled appearance for WWE is a Sept. 1 house show in China. He’s also booked for the Super Show-Down on Oct. 6 in Australia. It’s likely he’ll make an appearance at SmackDown 1000 on Oct. 16. We’ll be seeing plenty of Cena in the months to come.
We just won’t be seeing him at SummerSlam.
Weird.
