WWE swam with the sharks on Tues., July 24, as SmackDown faced off against not only the usual political talking heads, but also nature’s perfect predators over on Discovery’s Shark Week. And the blue brand did alright, keeping their positive audience trends going despite stiff competition.
The gains were modest, but nothing to scoff at in the middle of the summer. Viewership rose about 49K to 2,340,000, keeping SmackDown the sixth most watched among cable originals on the night, behind the partisan gab fests on Fox News and MSNBC.
In demographic rating, SmackDown actually notched up to .75 among 18 - 49 year olds. Unfortunately, due to those darn sharks over on Discovery, that was only fourth best.
Another bit of good news for WWE and Team Blue - Miz and Maryse’s reality show had a successful launch. Miz & Mrs. finished fifth in the ratings race with a .58, grabbing the ninth biggest audience of the night with 1,473,000 watching at 10PM Eastern.
We’ll see how that one-two punch of must-see TV continues on the road to SummerSlam. In the meantime, here’s a list of SmackDown’s numbers over the past six months:
