In two separate announcements, WWE got us pretty close to half the field for this year’s edition of the Mae Young Classic (MYC) tournament.
After revealing Kavita Devi, Mia Yim & Mercedes Martinez would be returning for the second MYC and informing us Killer Kelly, a Portuguese indie wrestler who recently worked the United Kingdom Championship Tournament shows in London, & Crystal, a 24 year old Filipina recruited on a 2017 scouting trip of the Southeast Asia - we’re now up to 15 confirmed entrants:
Kaitlyn
Kacy Catanzaro
Io Shirai
Rhea Ripley
Nicole Matthews
Jinny
Deonna Purrazzo
Tegan Nox
Jessica Elaban
Reina González
Kavita Devi
Mia Yim
Mercedes Martinez
Killer Kelly
Crystal
The three returning names confirmed today had very different experiences in 2017. Devi lost a first round match to Dakota Kai. Yim defeated Sarah Logan (in a match I really liked) before losing in round 2 to eventual runner-up and current NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler, and Martinez lasted until the semis before tapping to The Queen of Spades.
How will they do this year? Will Kelly and Crystal do much besides getting themselves in front of a bigger audience for one match?
We’ll find out when taping results start coming in Aug. 8 - 9.
