WWE MONEY IN THE BANK LIVE BLOG & MATCH COVERAGE
We’ve got real def rhythms and fresh new jams and ya think we got egos but we’re just hams. Scott plays stickball and likes to skate, Frank is never on time he’s always... sleeping? Late! Drink the drinks, the drinks they drank, I put my money in the bank and what do you know, that’s the pro wrestling show I’m here to liveblog for you, folks.
The pre-show begins with Renee Young welcoming us to the show and introducing her panel, tonight comprised of Booker T, David Otunga, and Peter Rosenberg. They run down the card to start before tossing backstage to Charly Caruso, who speaks about Daniel Bryan having a Q&A later in the preshow as well as mentioning the question of which member of New Day is in the ladder match.
She’s interrupted by Kevin Owens yelling with a black garbage bag over his shoulder and she takes the time to interview him. He says he feels great after being powerslammed onto the ladder, like Braun Strowman fixed a nagging back injury. Actually that’s sarcasm, and he felt like a fool for trusting Finn Balor and Bobby Roode for having the common sense to listen to him, so tonight he’s taken matters into his own hand.
A crewmember hands him a pair of jugs of syrup and he leaves. Back to the panel for video package and discussion of the WWE Championship match between AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura, followed by discussion of Bobby Lashley vs. Sami Zayn. From there to a video package for Asuka vs. Carmella and discussion of the same, and then Daniel Bryan vs. Big Cass gets the video package.
We go in for the Q&A with Daniel Bryan, who brings up the idea that Cass’ theory requires the big man to be good, and he is not. His game plan is to tap him out, and he’s tapped bigger men out, whether it’s the Yes! Lock, the heel hook, or the “You’re gonna get your head kicked in!” stomps, he’s gonna do it. Being general manager had ups and downs, being around something he loved and not being able to do it was hard and motivated him.
He puts Talking Smack over and says he misses it before saying his main advantages over Cass are his legs, lungs, and heart. He can’t outwork him, outpace him, and he doesn’t have the heart it took Bryan to fight for eighteen years to get here. Big men get handed things in WWE and don’t have to fight for it, but tonight he’s gonna fight for it and take it to Big Cass.
The panel discusses the match before tossing backstage to an interview with Seth Rollins, who comes on camera strumming Elias’ broken guitar. He claims it’s not the same guitar, but rather a gift from John Mayer who slid in his DMs and gave him a replica. But no, seriously, he’s looking forward to the fight for multiple reasons, Elias is gonna be stiff competition, but truth is he’s not on his level.
To put it in his terms, Elias’ greatest hits wouldn’t even make the cut on his b-sides, so Seth makes it clear that the Intercontinental Championship is his and he’ll leave Chicago with it. The panel discusses the match before tossing to a video package on Roman Reigns vs. Jinder Mahal and, you guessed it, discussion thereof.
Samoa Joe stops by the panel to discuss his match, and Kevin Owens stops in to pitch him on an alliance tonight, but Joe isn’t having any of it.
Bludgeon Brothers (Erick Rowan & Luke Harper) (c) vs. the Club (Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows) (WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship)
Gallows and Rowan to start, Erick hammering him with punches to knock him back into the corner. Whip across, Luke turns it around with punches of his own and Harper tags in. Big Hoot ducks the shot, tags Anderson in and they take Rowan and Harper out simultaneously before, Luke getting tangled up in the turnbuckles bad. Erick picks Gallows up on the floor and uses him as a bludgeon against Karl before taking Anderson out with a double team.
Harper and Rowan with stereo dropkicks to Sex Ferguson for good measure and we take a quick break for a house ad.
Back from our break, Harper is in control, catapulting Machine Gun into the middle rope! Tag to Rowan, pumphandle backbreaker into a lariat, only good for two! Wrenching Anderson over the ropes, crossface strike, tag to Harper. Karl breaks for a chop, an uppercut, Luke right back at him with palm strikes and hanging him over the ropes for a chop.
Off the ropes, elbow drop, only a nearfall, tag back to Erick. big splash, again just a two count. Reverse chinlock, into the two-fisted head vise, Karl gets away, off the ropes, and gets laid out with a back elbow. Corner body avalanche, whip to the corner but Machine Gun clears the apron and sidesteps a charge that puts Rowan shoulder first into the post! Harper recovered, but he eats the trademark Anderson spinning spinebuster!
Tag to Gallows, big boot and a superkick, fired upski, Stinger splash, a boot for Erick and a release pumphandle slam on Harper! Anderson and Gallows take Rowan to the floor together, Karl with a plancha but Big Hoot gets run over with a big boot when he turns around! Going for a suplex, denied, Magic Killer set up but Erick cuts it off! Bludgeon Brothers get Gallows up...
Bludgeon Brothers win by pinfall with a double-team powerbomb, retaining the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship.
The panel runs down the card for a bit of last minute hype and the Raw Women’s Championship match is the last to get video package treatment and panel discussion.
The main show opens with a video package explaining the concept of Money in the Bank and presenting the stories of our top matches in short.
Big Cass vs. Daniel Bryan
Circling, Bryan doing literal laps around the big man before the collar and elbow. Cass backs him into a corner and jaws at him but Dan sidesteps the punch and starts laying shots in. Big turns him around and tries again but gets the same result, this time Bryan up for mounted punches in the corner only to get shoved down. Leap frog, pick the leg, roll through but Cass kicks the American Dragon off!
Drop toehold, again going after the leg and again getting kicked away. Leg kicks, duck a lariat, more leg kicks as Cass ineffectively turtles up in the corner. Whip across, Bryan with the Flair Flip and Big shoves him from the apron to the floor! Following after... MILITARY PRESS DROP INTO THE APRON! Right hands, Bryan staggered but slow to be knocked down, elbow drop to the back follows and one to the front as well, but it’s not enough to put Dan away.
Bryan with punches, off the ropes and HE’S IN THE BEAR HUG! I CAN HARDLY BEAR IT! Overhead elbows to break the hug, punches, backflip up and over, off the ropes... BLACK HOLE SLAM CAN’T DO IT! Punch in the corner, body avalanche, mocking the Yes! fingers, charging in and a drop toehold puts him into the buckles! Hamstring kicks, dragon screw leg whip, another one, following him to the apron, posting his knee into the hardest part of the ring!
Punching the knee, dragging Cass deeper into the corner, Bryan slams his knee into the post repeatedly! Big manages to kick him away and get to vertical, Dan perches up top, missile dropkick! Running dropkicks follow, Cass tries to scoop him up... TILT-A-WHIRL YES! LOCK BUT CASS IS ABLE TO GET THE ROPES! Big rolls to the floor, picks Bryan’s leg but gets kicked into the barricade.
A dropkick puts him in harder, Dan perches up top... DIVING LARIAT TO THE FLOOR! Back inside, Cass cuts him off in the corner but is limping and slow to capitalize. Punches, climbing to meet him... AVALANCHE FALLAWAY SLAM! Argentine backbreaker rack follows, shaking it a few times and dropping Dan knee-first to the mat (almost a reverse Burning Hammer, if you will) when he tries to punch his way out.
Bryan with the low bridge, Big gets caught up in the ropes and the chop block makes him regret it! Another chop block once he’s free, Dan fired up and here come the Yes! Kicks! Buzzsaw countered with a goozle, shot off, Bryan dodges, basement dropkick to the knee and there’s the buzzsaw roundhouse landing true! Yes! fingers, waiting for Big to get up but he counters with a pop-up drop and a big boot... NOT ENOUGH!
Drawing the Dragon up, back to the Argentine backbreaker rack, shaking it a few times again, but Bryan lands on his feet this time, out of the corner, Busaiku knee! BUT HE WANTS TO END IT ON THE MAT! THE HEEL HOOK IS IN! IT’S OVER!
Daniel Bryan wins by submission with the heel hook.
Cass limps to the back as Bryan celebrates with the crowd.
A hype video for the WWE United Kingdom Championship tournament shows follows.
New Day are backstage and Xavier Woods says he had a bit of trouble thanks to the hot peppers at E3 but it’s time for strategy. Kevin Owens rolls up and presents the garbage bag of gifts to them. It’s full of pancakes. The syrup follows and New Day are willing to entertain him. KO asks which of them is in the ladder match but when they demure he says he gets it, it’s good strategy.
Owens asks if they’ve considered using the other two to take Braun out, and Kofi Kingston is indignant at the suggestion of cheating. Kev says he gets it, he’s just looking for common sense and wants to talk about it. Xavier invites him to have some pancakes and talk it over, but when Owens admits he doesn’t like breakfast foods and thinks New Day’s cereal sucks they banish him from their locker room.
Kev yells at them about how IHOP was right to become IHOb and how he hates Chicago. New Day divest him of the syrup and he leaves.
Bobby Lashley vs. Sami Zayn
Zayn immediately bails to the floor and dances around, stalling to frustrate Lashley. Back inside... and back out again. Third time’s the charm, Bobby following after and Sami catching him with a boot on his return, but Lashley is able to regain control momentarily until Zayn rakes his eyes. Helluva Kick against the ropes sends Bobby to the floor!
Referee Chad Patton begins his count, Lashley back to the apron, Sami with kicks and he heads to the floor to pass him into the post for good measure. Into the next post as well, again looking to take the countout win. Bobby back in, again Zayn meets him with kicks and stomps, mounting him for crossface strikes and then into grounded punches. More right hands, keeping Lashley off balance, jawing at him, but Bob catches a punch and crushes his hand en route to a lariat!
Charging in, boot to the face, diving crossbody and Lashley catches it for a fallaway slam! Charging lariat, shoulder thrust, front chancery and Sami slips out. Elbow, a chop, off the ropes, huge spinning spinebuster catches Zayn! Front chancery, into the delayed vertical suplex! Gutwrench lift into a Canadian backbreaker rack, dropping Sami, picking him right back up into another delayed vertical suplex!
Again with the Canadian backbreaker rack, shaking it in at length this time before dropping him! A third delayed vertical, one-handed, really making him think about it, one-handed pin...
Bobby Lashley wins by pinfall with a delayed vertical suplex.
An ad for a film called Mile 22 plays.
Backstage Nia Jax is discussing the rules of her match against Ronda Rousey with referee John Cone while Ronda Rousey shadowboxes in her locker room and Natalya looks on.
An ad for Miz & Mrs. plays.
Elias is in the ring to sing us a song. He sees Rollins as a stepping stone and a chance to show the entire world that WWE stands for Walk With Elias. He starts his song but is interrupted, first by the crowd, and then, of course, by his opponent’s entrance.
Elias vs. Seth Rollins (c) (WWE Intercontinental Championship)
Circling, collar and elbow, Rollins goes behind, reversed to a wristlock, reversed, snapmare, reverse chinlock, Seth with a hammerlock and he’s got Elias grounded for a moment. The Drifter gets to his feet, drop toehold, reversed back to the hammerlock but Elias gets out and puts the boots to Seth this time. Drawing him up, Rollins with right hands, side headlock, shot off, drop down, dropkick and the Drifter drifts to ringside!
Slingshot plancha from the Architect, strikes on the floor before sending him back in the ring, springboard lariat, and punches in the corner such that referee Rod Zapata has to back him off and the Drifter is able to hit a killer lariat that sends Rollins crashing to the floor! Back inside, Elias putting boots to him, running stomp, headed to the floor, smashing his throat into the apron and jawing at him.

Seth tuning up the band, low kick, Blackout... Elias rolls out! Suicide dive and the Drifter catches him and throws him into the steps! Up top, diving elbow... ROLLINS WON’T GIVE UP HIS TITLE THAT EASY! Drawing him up, thinking Drift Away but the Architect gets into the ropes to stop it. Clubbing away, Elias gets him up in the corner, big chop, Seth slips under him, going for a powerbomb but his knee gives out!

We go backstage where Kurt Angle and Paige are watching. Kurt is stoked and Paige says he should be, but there’s still the men’s match and she’s sure SmackDown’s bringing that one home. Angle says dual-branded pay-per-views are real cool and he gets to see old friends like Samoa Joe and AJ Styles, to which Paige tells him to keep his eyes off her roster because they bleed black and yellow blue.
Constable Baron Corbin rolls up to ruin everyone’s fun and remind Kurt that he serves at Stephanie McMahon’s beck and call. Paige asks if Baron’s still sad he failed miserably at cashing his Money in the Bank in, but Corbin’s all business and reminds Kurt to get it done.
Sunil Singh gives his man his usual big introduction, barely hindered by being in a wheelchair and wearing a neckbrace.
