WWE allegedly plans to continue pushing Roman Reigns as a Daniel Bryan-type underdog

If you were hoping the pro wrestling conversation would move away from Roman Reigns... I’m afraid I’ve got some bad news.

He’s going to remain a topic of conversation and a source of debate for a long time. I’ve been watching wrestling on-and-off (mostly on) since the 1980s, and I can’t ever recall a performer/character who’s been presented like Reigns in 2018 - someone who WWE isn’t fully committed to, yet won’t back down from treating like the top star.

Similarly, “Vince is trying to push Roman like _ fill in Superstar’s name here _” should be a tired joke and a worn out talking point by now. After he was given The Rock’s promos, and set opposite Mr. McMahon like he was Stone Cold Steve Austin, and put over by Triple H and John Cena... what else is there? I want to scoff at the idea The ‘E would try to get the handsome, 6’ 3”, 265 pound former football lineman over as a B+ Player the company doesn’t want as their champion. But then he calls Brock Lesnar “Vince’s boy” and keeps cutting promos about “backstage politics” and I can’t completely dismiss a report like this one from Dave Meltzer on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio:

“They’re trying to tell the story and I can’t believe it because they’ve been trying for a couple of months, but they’re still trying to tell the story that [Roman Reigns] is Daniel Bryan and management is screwing him over and that’s why he’s not the champion. But nobody buys it.

They’re trying to figure out a way to get people to cheer him. We’re supposed to think that all these things that happened — the whole thing that they favor Brock Lesnar but it didn’t work. I guess for whatever reason even though it didn’t work nobody has a better idea so that’s what they’re going with.”

This would be ridiculous even if Bryan wasn’t actually back on the roster as a full-time wrestler. And that’s just the start of questions their going in this direction raises...

Is the idea Vince lost faith in him and that’s why Cena was ragging on him for not being able to cut promos? Or did the company really lose faith in him? But then why is he still floating around the top of the card? Is being moved into a feud with Jinder Mahal the company holding him down?

Like I said, I’ve never seen anything like this before. I just wish I could say I can’t wait to see what happens next.
