WrestleMania 34 results: Cedric Alexander stomps out Mustafa Ali’s heart to finally win Cruiserweight title

It probably wasn’t the 70,000 fans Cedric Alexander, Mustafa Ali and DRAKE MAVERICK talked about for their Cruiserweight Championship Tournament final, but by opening the USA Network portion of the WrestleMania 34 Kickoff Show broadcast at shortly after 6PM Eastern on Sun., April 8, Ali and Alexander got as prime a spot as you can get without being on the main card.

The start exemplified the face vs. face, “Heart vs. Soul” build the two 205 Live Superstars brought into their ‘Mania moment. Alexander’s approach changed a little, as after taking Ali out with a dive to the floor, Cedric tried to ground the high-flying Chicago Native.

Ali fought back as he has throughout the months-long tourney, connecting with a sit-out facebuster to even things up. Cedric answered back with a Spanish Fly in the ring for a nearfall, then Mustafa answered back with one off the top rope that also only got two. The two sought to get the Superdome crowd into the action.

The key moment came on a small screen during a commercial for Ronda Rousey’s debut. Alexander chose to not win by countout, instead pulling Ali back in for a cover. After a kickout, a huge DDT set Cedric up for the 0-5-4. Mustafa hit it, but when Ced got his foot on the ropes, the crowd came alive.

A follow-up attempt missed, and Ali was clearly hurting. But the Heart of 205 Live wouldn’t stay down. It took three stiff back elbows, some pleading and a Lumbar Check, but the title that eluded Alexander throughout 205 Live history was finally his.

After an emotional scene of Cedric thanking his opponent for sharing the moment.

It wasn’t quite the kind of action fans have grown accustomed to on the re-tooled 205 Live, and the Rousey commercial was a weird moment, but it was a good match and a great moment for Alexander.

And there’s always Tuesday night.
