WrestleMania 34 results: Asuka’s streak ends; Charlotte is still your SmackDown women’s champion

WWE Network

The second match on the main pay-per-view (PPV) portion of tonight’s (Sun., April 8, 2018) WrestleMania 34 event from Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, featured Charlotte Flair putting her SmackDown women’s championship on the line against Asuka. They came in still pushing the idea that “The Empress of Tomorrow” is undefeated (she is not) while also teasing Carmella’s involvement with a Money in the Bank cash-in.

The streak is over.

They started fast, grabbing the audience after the bell but once they settled in, they had a back-and-forth war of attrition. Charlotte’s moonsault was countered into a triangle choke. Charlotte countered a hip attack with a headkick, then Asuka suplexed her off the apron onto the floor below. The slow motion replay looked BRUTAL on Charlotte.

Charlotte beat the count before getting in Asuka’s face and asking, “That’s all you got?”

Flair’s next play was Spanish Fly, and the slo mo of that looked brutal too. But it only got a two count. She followed up with Natural Selection but Asuka immediately grabbed a submission that the champ fought out of.

They were giving each other their best, and both fighting on.

They also told a story of Charlotte hurting her shoulder early, so when it came time for the Figure Eight, she couldn’t post on one arm. Still, it was enough to get the tap to retain her title.

Asuka’s streak is over.

After, she grabbed a microphone and said “Charlotte was ready for Asuka. Congratulations.”

They embraced in the middle of the ring.
