NXT tames its TakeOver Tag Title trouble with a Triple Threat

WWE.com

The last questions about the card for TakeOver: New Orleans all centered around the Tag Team Championship match. Not only would we not have challengers until the finals of the third Dusty Rhodes Classic took place on the episode of NXT which aired on April 4, but Bobby Fish of defending champs Undisputed ERA was officially ruled out due to a knee injury he suffered in early March.

All our questions were answered on the last offering from the black-and-yellow brand before Saturday, April 7’s live special. Fittingly for a weekend in which WWE is offering lots of multi-person and team bouts, the answers came in the form of a Triple Threat!

Fish’s Undisputed ERA partners Kyle O’Reilly and Adam Cole crashed the Dusty finals match between Authors of Pain and Roderick Strong and Pete Dunne before either team could secure a victory. General Manager William Regal thought it was a ploy to get out of having to defend the straps in The Big Easy, so he outsmarted the conniving heels - not only would they still have a tag title match, but it would be against both teams with the championship and the Dusty Cup up for grabs.

What’s more, Cole has to either pull double-duty in what amount to two no-DQ matches - unless he decides to withdraw from the ladder match for the NXT North American Championship or leave O’Reilly to defend the tag belts by himself.

That Regal, he’s crafty.

This Triple Threat, which will could leave AoP as two-time champs, or Dunne or Cole a double champion by the time the night is through, rounds out a card for Smoothie King Center which also includes:

  • Aleister Black vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas (c) for the NXT Title
  • Ember Moon (c) vs. Shayna Baszler for the Women’s Championship
  • EC3 vs. Lars Sullivan vs. Adam Cole vs. Ricochet vs. Velveteen Dream vs. Killian Dain in a Ladder Match for the North American Title
  • Johnny Gargano vs. Tommaso Ciampa in an Unsanctioned Match
