Miscellaneous Segments

That leaves about 13.9% (43m 05s) of the show for everything else. This is the 20th highest percentage in this category out of the 72 events in my data set.

Most of these miscellaneous segments are crammed into the time after one post-match segment ends and before the next pre-match segment begins. WrestleMania 34 included 12 different blocks of miscellaneous segments. Here is how long each block lasted, in chronological order:

  • Block 1: 5m 56s (Then Now Forever; America the Beautiful; Opening video & pyro)
  • Block 2: 2m 06s (Hype for Andre documentary; Cena in audience)
  • Block 3: 1m 32s (Ads for WWE Shop & Rocket League)
  • Block 4: 1m 29s (Ad for Snickers; Plug for PPV theme song)
  • Block 5: 1m 03s (Ads for Cricket Wireless & Tapout)
  • Block 6: 11m 49s (Ad for WWE Network; In-ring segment w/Elias)
  • Block 7: 6m 53s (HOF recap and on-stage segment)
  • Block 8: 3m 03s (Ad for Fighting With My Family; Attendance announcement)
  • Block 9: 1m 00s (Ad for Backlash 2018; Filler commentary)
  • Block 10: 2m 04s (Ads for WWE 2K18 & Greatest Royal Rumble; Recap of pre-show)
  • Block 11: 1m 18s (Hype for WrestleMania 35)
  • Block 12: 4m 52s (Video highlights of WrestleMania 34)

I decided to count the in-ring segment between Elias and Cena as a miscellaneous segment rather than a pre-match segment. One consequence of this decision is that Cena’s entrance time ends up in the miscellaneous category rather than the pre-match category.

There is a really good argument to be made that this segment should be classified as part of the pre-match segment for the Undertaker match, and I could very well revisit this decision down the line. For now, I decided that it was enough to stand alone as a separate “Elias performance” segment on the card, which ends up in the miscellaneous category.

The Elias segment lasted 8m 39s, which is roughly 2.8% of the show. That’s the approximate adjustment to make to the overall Pre-Match and Miscellaneous percentages for WrestleMania 34, in the case where it is instead classified as a pre-match segment.

Summary

The overall run time for WrestleMania 34 was 5h 10m 54s, and this ranks the highest out of all 72 events in my data set.

Here is a listing of how much total show time was allocated for each match when you add up all 3 components: pre-match time, match time, and post-match time. This list also includes where each total time ranks among the 514 entries in my data set.

  • 37m 11s: AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura (52nd longest out of 514 entries)
  • 36m 37s: Rousey & Angle vs. Stephanie & Triple H (58th)
  • 31m 54s: Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns (102nd)
  • 30m 25s: Bryan & Shane vs. Owens & Zayn (120th)
  • 28m 07s: Charlotte Flair vs. Asuka (137th)
  • 23m 44s: Miz vs. Rollins vs. Balor (199th)
  • 20m 00s: Alexa Bliss vs. Nia Jax (269th)
  • 17m 25s: Orton vs. Roode vs. Rusev vs. Mahal (322nd)
  • 16m 08s: The Bar vs. Strowman & Some Kid (356th)
  • 14m 11s: Undertaker vs. John Cena (395th)
  • 12m 07s: Usos vs. New Day vs. Bludgeon Bros (441st)

These results show that the Usos’ match at WrestleMania 34 received less time than anything else on the show, with all three components adding up to only 12m 07s. Considering that New Day’s entrance time clocked in at 2m 51s, that means the Usos and Bludgeon Brothers were each on screen for less than 10 minutes on a main card that lasted nearly 311 minutes.

Now here is a look at the “Match Time Percentage” for each match. For any given match, this percentage shows how the match time compares to the combined pre-match and post-match segment time. For some context, it’s good to know that the median result here since 2013 is 62.6%.

(Here’s an example calculation: an entry with a match time of 6m 00s, pre-match time of 3m 00s, and a post-match time of 1m 00s has a score of 60.0%, because the match time of 6m 00s is 60% of the total sum of 10m 00s for all three components.)

  • 65.2%: Miz vs. Rollins vs. Balor
  • 56.3%: Rousey & Angle vs. Stephanie & Triple H
  • 54.7%: AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
  • 50.6%: Bryan & Shane vs. Owens & Zayn
  • 49.6%: Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns
  • 48.8%: Usos vs. New Day vs. Bludgeon Bros
  • 47.3%: Orton vs. Roode vs. Rusev vs. Mahal
  • 46.5%: Charlotte Flair vs. Asuka
  • 45.2%: Alexa Bliss vs. Nia Jax
  • 24.5%: The Bar vs. Strowman & Some Kid
  • 19.7%: Undertaker vs. John Cena

Last year at WrestleMania 33, three of the matches reached 60% or higher in this metric, whereas only one match reached that mark at WrestleMania 34. That’s one of the reasons why I think it’s fair to wonder if WWE is getting a little bit carried away here. The sum of pre-match segment time and post-match segment time (2h 17m 09s) is actually greater than the total match time (2h 10m 40s) at WrestleMania 34.
