Alberto Del Rio reportedly visited WWE headquarters last week

Following up on an item sourced to him from our most recent Rumor Roundup, PWInsider’s Mike Johnson has a more detailed report on former AAA, CMLL, WWE and Impact World champion Alberto El Patron/Del Rio and his dealings with Vince McMahon and his company.

El Patron was said to be at WWE headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut last Wednesday, Feb. 28. The main reason he was there was to film material for a future Network special or DVD on Rey Mysterio, but “numerous sources” told Insider he met with Vince while he was there.

There’s no word on what was discussed, but Johnson reiterates what he spoke about on their subscriber-exclusive PWInsider Elite Audio - “there have been rumblings of late within WWE that McMahon was very much for Patron returning to the company, as he’s always been extremely high on Patron as a performer and a character.”

The second generation luchador has a turbulent history with WWE. Released in 2014 for “unprofessional conduct” after an altercation with an office employee who was said to have made a racist joke about him, he returned a little more than a year later. After being suspended for a Wellness Policy violation, he negotiated his release in August of 2016, citing dissatisfaction with how he was being handled, just ten months after rejoining the company.

During his second run with WWE, he began a relationship Paige which frequently made headlines for, among other things, an incident at Orlando International Airport that resulted in his being suspended by Impact and stripped of their World title, and El Patron’s rants about WWE - specifically Executive Vice President Paul “Triple H” Levesque. Since splitting with Paige, Alberto has indicated his issues with WWE have been smoothed over.

In other reporting from PWInsider, the site says El Patron’s Impact deal is close to expiring, but that he met with officials from that company in Canada recently and that they’re hopeful he will re-sign. Johnson believes Alberto would be Impact would make him their highest paid talent.

Stay tuned.
