We’ve heard from a lot of folks who are excited that Daniel Bryan will be back wrestling for WWE soon now that doctors have declared him fit to do so. But we haven’t heard from his future brother-in-law, who also happens to be one of the biggest stars in pro wrestling history.
John Cena’s comments on Bryan’s return are interesting for their family and career connections, but also because Cena is one of WWE’s most visible and reliable spokesperson. If he says, odds are good it’s the messaging Vince McMahon and team want out in the world.
The first part of Cena’s remarks to TMZ Sports come from a relative, co-worker and fellow lover of wrestling:
“From a fan’s perspective, I think it’s wonderful because they all want to see him and they know what he’s capable of. From a family perspective, I’ve had a chance to talk with Bryan at great length about his passion for wrestling - it’s what he was born to do, and I know deep down how he feels about it. And to be told that ‘it’s over’ when it isn’t time for it to be over, for him it was very shocking.
But what people don’t know, and hopefully you’ll take this away from your interview is that young man did absolutely everything possible to challenge the word ‘no’. And it’s how ironic that he’s known so much for ‘Yes! Yes! Yes!’ he turns ‘no’ into ‘yes’. And he worked his ass off to make that happen. There’s no more deserving a person of a moment in the middle of a WWE ring than Bryan Danielson. I’m extremely happy for him, I’m happy for Brie and their family, cause it affects my family - a wonderful day for all of us that are close to Bryan.“
His answer to a question about what DB being cleared means for others dealing with concussions and brain trauma in WWE and other contact sports redirects in a way that lines up with the company’s announcement of the return focusing on the doctors who made the decision, and Bryan’s promo from the Mar. 20 SmackDown thanking the company’s medical team for treating him as a person first and a wrestler second:
“I think segregating it to what we do for an occupation is too small. If you have a medical issue, find out what the issue is and do your damnedest to make yourself healthy and better. That’s exactly what Bryan did. He’s gone through every single protocol, tenfold. He dedicates a majority of his day - he is either a husband, a father or getting healthier. And he’s one of the healthiest people in WWE. And it just takes a lot of convincing of other minds that he’s that healthy. But he’s confident in his position and he’s back where he belongs. So, my personal welcome home.”
Overall, they’re great quotes that demonstrate what so many people love about Cena and Bryan - and why the Face That Runs The Place is one of the most valuable resources WWE has.
