Xavier Woods is on a publicity tour of Southeast Asia for WWE. During a press conference at a hotel in Bonifacio Global City, Phillipines, he spoke on the subject of fan criticism of the company’s product, and of wrestling in general. It’s difficult to tell the context of the quotes reported in the Manila Bulletin, but fortunately, I’m sure everyone will process them calmly and rationally...
On people saying NXT TakeOver events are better than main roster pay-per-view (PPV) shows:
“When people talk about the difference between the organizations – not even organizations – between like NXT and the main roster. So when they say like, ‘Oh man! TakeOver killed it. SummerSlam, this is gonna suck!’ It’s on the same company. What is there to complain about?
You just got an awesome wrestling show on Saturday night, you just had an awesome wrestling show on Sunday, then you’re gonna watch Raw on Monday, and SmackDown on Tuesday, then NXT. What are you complaining about?”
One quote which shouldn’t get too much pushback concerned the wealth of options fans have these days:
“And then like, you can watch New Japan. You can watch Triple A. You can watch so much wrestling from all corners of the world. And it’s all awesome and it’s all good. It’s all different guys and girls portraying their form of art that they love – that they wanna give to you.”
His closing remarks are what might get him the most flak, though:
“So anytime anyone complains about wrestling it’s so annoying to me because people come off as these entitled infants.
Because in reality, wrestling hurts so bad. And then we’re hurting ourselves to entertain the masses. And sometimes the masses wanna tell us how much it sucks.”
It’s undoubtedly difficult to put yourself through the bumps of a pro wrestling match only to hear folks who’ve never done the same nitpick your performance. At the same time, however, it’s possible to respect the work at the same time you criticize the product.
