WWE EVOLUTION LIVE BLOG & MATCH COVERAGE

I remember when you were hopeful, never thought your life would be lived inside a coffin with a moral sacrifice and a million social obligations, labels and expectations. When you were young and a modern seventeen, in vogue and vague pursuit of a cosmopolitan dream, but me, I’m just here to liveblog this pro wrestling show, folks.

The pre-show opens with Renee Young welcoming us and introducing her all-female panel, consisting today of Paige and Beth Phoenix.

We go backstage where Alexa Bliss and Sasha Banks are interviewed and talk about how amazing having an all-women pay-per-view is, their experience wrestling in Abu Dhabi, and making history. Back to the panel for video package and discussion of Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte Flair, for which Michael Cole joins the panel. Next they run the card down in short to shill for the WWE Network before tossing to another interview.

This time it’s Trish Stratus, who talks about how this is everything they were working for in the beginning and this is full circle for her, seeing as she debuted in this very building. She talks about coming out of retirement to tag with longtime rival Lita and how excited she is to have that energy and excitement from their history together.

Carmella joins the panel to talk about that match and making history and then segue into the Natalya/Bayley/Sasha vs. Riott Squad trios match. Backstage again, Nattie is interviewed and talks about how they’ve got some tricks up their sleeve to put the Riott Squad in their place. Back to the panel, R-Truth rolls up and says he’s got breaking news after talking to Paige in the back, despite that she’s been on the panel the entire time.

He says he’s going to be in the battle royal and looks forward to winning it and wrestling Carmella for the title. She lets him down gently on both fronts and asks for his support. He says he’ll be there and... DANCE BREAK! An ad reel for a movie entitled Nobody’s Fool follows, featuring a bit of promotion for Nikki Bella vs. Ronda Rousey.

A video package for the Mae Young Classic finals follows, complete with obligatory panel discussion. We go backstage where Maria Menounos is interviewed about how historic tonight is. Back to the panel and we get our obligatory video package putting Stephanie McMahon over for inventing the concept of women (just in time for me, no less, thanks!) and recapping the announcement of this show.

Eve Torres joins the panel! She talks about how things were in her time with WWE and how excited she is for the show tonight, especially our two main roster title matches. Beth Phoenix takes a moment to put over all the men who fought for WWE’s women to be able to progress to the point we’re currently at, calling Fit Finlay by name.

Stephanie McMahon, inventor of women, is interviewed backstage. She says this has taken every woman who ever stepped into a wrestling ring and every fan that demanded more from WWE in terms of their treatment of WWE’s women before moving on to talking about how Triple H’s work with the women of NXT set the ball rolling and how she wants folks to get blown away by tonight’s show and demand more.

The next topic of panel discussion is the battle royal before we go backstage with Nia Jax and her aunt, Ata Jackson, for an interview. Jax says she’s ready for her match and it’s amazing that she gets to share this moment with her aunt. Ata says she’s excited to be here and see all the barriers knocked down, and Nia says the women of WWE will do whatever they want next.

Panel discussion for the NXT Women’s Championship match follows, and we go backstage to interview Ronda Rousey. She talks about wanting her daughters to deal with less bullshit than she has and how she’s trying her best to beat the path down a little bit more before talking about her match tonight and how she’s going to make sure Nikki Bella leaves the ring looking different than she walked in.

Video package for the Raw Women’s Championship match follows, with panel discussion after. The panel runs the card down one last time and that’s it for the pre-show.

The main show begins with a video package about the WWE women’s revolution.

In the arena, we get a live music introduction from Nita Strauss and Lzzy Hale, playing a heretofore unheard theme song for tonight’s show.

Alexa Bliss makes her entrance and cuts a promo, saying it’s way past Trish and Lita’s bed time, so she needs them to really focus as she introduces the true pioneers of the women’s evolution, Alicia Fox and Mickie James.

Alicia Fox & Mickie James vs. Lita & Trish Stratus

James and Lita to start, collar and elbow, Lita backing her into the corner and throwing a punch after Mickie shoves her away on the break. Off the ropes, flying headscissors, a shove, back roll into mounted punches but James cuts her off with a knee and makes the tag. Fox blocks the DDT but gets hip tossed into the ring and bieled into the corner. Charging lariat, whip across, hip toss for Mickie, stacked up in the corner and she tags Stratus in... POETRY IN MOTION!

Trish lines Alicia up, judo throw, collar and elbow, shift to a hammerlock, reversed, flying snapmare to counter! Foxy charges in, gets snapmared again, and Stratus wants James! Tag made and the atmosphere is electric for old rivals to meet! Jawing, Mickie pokes her in the chest and that begets a slugfest! Whip reversed, Trish with a Lou Thesz Press into mounted punches!

Boot connects, James up top, grabs the handspring, jockeying for position, slugging it out up top... AVALANCHE FRANKENSTEINER FROM STRATUS! The heels regroup on the floor, babyfaces off the ropes... no dive when the heels run away! Deciding discretion is the better part of valor, they go to leave but Lita and Trish follow and we have a brawl on the floor!

Back in, Lita draws James up and a malfunction at the junction leads to Fox kicking her partner in the face! Down and out, Lita up top... ALEXA BLISS CUTS HER OFF! Alicia in control, tag to Mickie, putting boots to her in the corner, folling up with a reverse chinlock but Lita throws her off. Knee to the face to block the tag, clear the apron, Stratus gets in the ring and we get a nearfall off a neckbreaker.

Tag back to Alicia, northern lights suplex into the bridge... NO GOOD! Reverse chinlock, Lita fights to her feet and out with elbows, floats over... inverted DDT! Both women down and out, crawling, reaching... TAGS MADE! Trish with right hands, flying mare, another one, off the ropes for the thrust spinebuster... only a nearfall! Chops follow, James on the back foot, stumbling into the corner but she gets a boot up and a schoolboy for two of her own.

Lining her up, front kick, DDT blocked, headlock, Stratusfaction... FOX BREAKS IT UP! Twist of Fate to Alicia, Lita heads up top... MOONSAULT! Trish lines her up...

Lita & Trish Stratus win by pinfall with the Chick Kick from Stratus on Mickie James.

A house ad for WWE 2K19 follows.

The Bella Twins are interviewed backstage. Brie says Nikki did nothing wrong and Ronda moved first, but tonight is about celebrating the women’s evolution, so tonight they’re celebrating the one, the only, Ronda Rousey’s mother. When you think about it, she’s overcome so much adversity every time her daughter breaks her word, so tonight they’re naming her an honorary member of the Bella Army.

Ronda says she’s gonna end her, well she’s Nikki Bella, she’s fearless and the only thing ending tonight is Rousey’s title reign.

We get a video package of stars past and present talking about how things have changed for women in WWE.

The Iconic Duo get some promo time during their entrance, expressing their disgust over how people from here in Long Island sound and pledge to send everyone in the match back to obscurity.

It’s down to Moon and Jax, Nia biels her across the damn ring but Ember is able to recover and try to dump her. Nia reverses, Moon lands on her feet on the apron, staggers her with a shot, front chancery, dragging Jax over the top rope... ZELINA VEGA IS STILL LEGAL AND DUMPS THEM BOTH TO THE APRON! She celebrates like she’s already won but turns right around to see Nia in her face! She’s on her back with a sleeper but Jax reverses, military press... DROP TO THE FLOOR!

Moon’s still in it, dropkick, lariats, staggering the bigger woman, off the ropes and she’s caught by the chokebomb! Nia drags her over...

Nia Jax wins, last eliminating Ember Moon to become #1 conteder to the WWE Raw Women’s Championship.

Ata Johnson is show in the crowd after her niece’s victory.

Nia is interviewed in the ring. Emotional, she talks about how much this means and says now her mind is on the Raw Women’s Championship and she’s one step closer to regaining it. Asked who she’d rather face for the title, she says she wishes the best of luck to both of them and says whoever wins needs to enjoy the moment because it won’t last long.

We get a video package for the Girl Up campaign.

A number of this year’s MYC competitors are shown seated at ringside for this one.

Io Shirai vs. Toni Storm (2018 Mae Young Classic Finals)

Collar and elbow, Storm with a side headlock, Shirai reverses with a foot to the pit of the knee, Toni reverses to a wristlock. Floating over, handstand escape and she offers a handshake that Shirai accepts. Back to the lockup, a wristlock, Io reverses, top wristlock, reversed again to a hammerlock!

Immediate reversal back to a wristlock, Toni works her way out of it and throws a slap rush into a rolling solebutt and follows it up with a basement dropkick for two! Drawing Shirai up, uppercuts and forearms, whip across, Io ducks a lariat, handspring into a dropkick and she kips up! Fired up, giant step into a handspring knee gets Shirai two!

Transition right into a Rings of Saturn, Storm fighting but she can’t break free so she’s forced to reach for the ropes with her feet... and she gets a break! Up and over the charge, duck a lariat and she plants Io with a German suplex! Running hip attack in the corner, pop to the apron and up top but Shirai joins her and springboard dropkicks her to the floor!

Another video package about how things have changed over the years for women in WWE follows.

Becky Lynch (c) vs. Charlotte Flair (WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship Last Woman Standing Match)

Flair ducks a lariat, Lynch ducks a kick, a chop, but a shove connects and Becky jaws and gets dropped with a chop right after! Getting in referee Mike Chioda’s face, landing on her feet off a slam, she drops Charlotte and demands he count, but she kips up at two! Double leg, upkick escapes, pass aside and a flying forearm lays the challenger out again!

Off the ropes, leg drop, mocking strut, elbow drop, the turning leg drop and again Chioda counts. Up at four, uppercuts beget a neckbreaker, whip reversed, Flair Flip, shoulder block, up top, Lynch cuts her off with a forearm and hits a press slam! Exploder suplex follows, slinging Charlotte out of the corner but a diving forearm comes up empty and Flair hits a boot!

Becky up at four, she bounces Flair off the turnbuckles before throwing her to the floor, whereupon Lynch gets a kendo stick out from under the ring and wails on Charlotte with it! Walking her around the ringside area, welting her back up, Flair catches a shot but gets kicked to the floor and her face smashed into the apron! Becky again thinking about plunder, getting a chair this time.

They both throw chair after chair into the ring and Flair escalates by getting a table but Lynch clips her with a forearm off the steel steps before she can get it set up! Becky laid out in return, up at five and she cuts Charlotte off with the table almost set up by cracking a chair over her back! Back inside, Lynch biels her into the loose pile of chairs before engaging in some extreme feng shui and stacking them to her liking.

Exploder suplex blocked with elbows... CHARLOTTE BACK SUPLEXES HER INTO THE PILE OF STEEL CHAIRS! Flair rolls to the floor and pulls another table out from under the ring and sets it up in the ring... PUMPHANDLE URANAGE INTO THE STEEL CHAIRS FROM THE CHAMP! More stomps to the knee... FIGURE FOUR ON THE LADDER! BRIDGING BACK AND LYNCH IS TAPPING TO NO AVAIL! BECKY GRABS A CHAIR AND HAMMERS FLAIR WITH IT TO ESCAPE! Lynch to the floor, Flair breaks the count and heads out after her. Becky puts her into the steps, stumbling, the damage to her legs clearly taking its toll as she screams at Charlotte to stay down.

Throwing Flair into the post, Chioda resumes his count and Lynch decides discretion is the better part of valor and grabs her title belt and starts walking! Charlotte charges after her, deep in the crowd, throwing chops, back to the ringside area, dismantling the German announce table, she smashes the champ head-first into the English desk a few times before setting the ladder up in front of the German desk.

Lynch smashes her in the head with the title belt and sets her up on the German announce table, climbing the ladder... DIVING LEG DROP THROUGH THE GERMAN ANNOUNCE TABLE! Both women recovered, Lynch clobbers her with a kick and rains punches down! Covering her in office chairs, absolutely burying the Queen beneath them, adding a shattered portion of the broken table from the ring and finally Chioda counts!

Flair barely stirring at eight, on her knees at nine... SHE’S UP! SHE’S GOT THE KENDO STICK AND IS WAILING ON BECKY WITH IT! Spear connects, Charlotte rights the table on the floor and smashes Becky’s face into it before setting her up atop it. Becky recovers, joins her in the corner, jockeying for position... AWESOME BOMB FROM THE TOP THROUGH THE DAMN TABLE!

On her knees at eight but she can’t get to her feet...

Becky Lynch wins, retaining the WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship.

Lynch celebrates with her title as referees tend to Flair.

Commentary shills for the WWE Network by running down the card for Crown Jewel, because after a match as good as that last one, it’s good to be reminded of the moral quandary that’s inherent to enjoying WWE.

Nikki Bella vs. Ronda Rousey (c) (WWE Raw Women’s Championship)

Rousey right in with a takedown and shoving Bella back to her feet, toying with her. Collar and elbow, another judo throw, looking to go right for the armbar before jawing at Nikki and telling her to fight. Catching her on the mat, toying with Bella yet more before letting her go. A frustrated Nikki kicks the turnbuckles and consults her sister before charging right into another judo throw!

To the floor, Brie runs interference and Nikki puts Ronda into the post! Drawing her up, distracting referee Rod Zapata and Brie puts her into the post this time! Back in, cover gets one, and she applies a reverse chinlock to grind Rousey down. Dumping her to the floor, following after, smashing her face into the apron and then throwing her into the barricade!

Back inside, figure four headscissors applied, wrenching it in and doing push-ups as Ronda struggles! Escaping, backing off, Rousey’s visibly shocked but has the wherewithal to get a kick off before Brie gets a cheap shot in! Nikki smashes the champ face-first into the turnbuckles and then the post, and the cover’s only good for two! Cobra twist applied, grinding her fist into Ronda’s ribs as she tries to fight out of it!

Rousey claws at her grip but Bella won’t break, so she resorts to prying at her leg and destabilizing her. On the mat, posting to her feet, finally she throws Nikki aside! Charging in, back elbow up, springboard roundhouse kick... NO GOOD! Shoulder thrusts follow with Ronda in the corner, setting her up top, climbing after, jockeying for position, Brie runs interference again... DIVING ELBOW DROP BUT NOBODY’S HOME!

DOUBLE SWINGING DEATH VALLEY DRIVER! Kicking Nikki into the corner, waiting for her to rise, flurry of punches into a monkey flip and mounted forearms! Back to her feet, judo throws, Bella begs off in the corner but Ronda decks her anyway!

Hooking her... CAPTURE SUPLEX! Nikki decides discretion is the better part of valor but Rousey drags her back in! Brie with a right hand, Ronda blocks the second... AND JUDOS HER RIGHT OVER THE ANNOUNCE TABLE! Back in, Nikki’s ready, Alabama Slam... STILL NO! Sidestep the charge, the champ takes the post hard, fireman’s carry, Rack Attack 2.0... ROUSEY KICKS OUT!

Bella getting in Zapata’s face, visibly frustrated she pops up to the second for her sister’s trademark Brie Mode dropkick but Ronda cuts her off! AVALANCHE ARMBAR TAKEDOWN! FALLING BACK INTO IT ALL THE WAY... IT’S OVER!

Ronda Rousey wins by submission with the cross armbar, retaining the WWE Raw Women’s Championship.

Rousey celebrates with the title while the Bella skulk off up the ramp.

Nia Jax is shown watching on a monitor backstage.
