It wasn’t announced until the last minute but the “main event” of the Royal Rumble Kickoff show from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia featured Bobby Roode issuing an open challenge for his United States championship. That’s the title he won in a tournament after Dolph Ziggler vacated it and disappeared from television.
One of the losers in that tournament, Mojo Rawley, whom Roode defeated in the second round, answered the challenge.
The crowd was underwhelmed, to say the least, when that music hit the loud speakers.
The match largely consisted of Rawley physically dominating in such a way that it seemed designed to make clear he’s somewhere near the same level. Roode kept himself in it, though, and ultimately got just enough on the Glorious DDT to retain the title.
It was what it was.
