WWE ROYAL RUMBLE LIVE BLOG & MATCH COVERAGE

The night is calling, I have to go. The wolf is hungry, he runs the show. He’s licking his lips, he’s ready to win, on the hunt tonight for love at first sting. Here I am, to liveblog this here pro wrestling show for you, folks.

Renee Young welcomes us to the show and introduces her panel, tonight consisting of Peter Rosenberg, David Otunga, and Jerry “the King” Lawler. We’re informed that we’ll join Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn in the social media lounge later and we go out into the crowd with Sam Roberts.

Our first video package is for the women’s Royal Rumble match and Alexa Bliss joins the panel, replacing David Otunga, to discuss the match. They make explicit the idea that the winner of the Rumble gets to choose which champion they wrestle, and Alexa wants to wrestle Nia Jax but would be happy to beat Asuka at WrestleMania. The panel run down the card and we take a quick break for some house ads.

In the locker room, Jason Jordan rolls up on Seth Rollins, who wants to talk to him about tonight. Jordan says he’s honored to team with Seth and with his superior pedigree there’s no way they can lose. They’re gonna break the Bar, and Angle didn’t throw them together on some whim. Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin roll up, Chad laughing about Jason being a daddy’s boy. Jordan mockingly insists that the locker room is just for champions but embraces Gable.

Jason tells Shelton his dad has told him a lot about him and mentions that American Alpha were almost called the World’s Greatest Tag Team. The tension mounts as Chad points out that Jordan couldn’t make it as a singles guy. Jason points to the title as evidence that he’s doing better and wishes them luck in their match tonight.

The panel discusses both tag title matches in turn and we get a video package on the history of the Royal Rumble featuring the winner of the first Royal Rumble, “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan. This is followed by a handcam promo from Bayley about the historical importance of the first-ever women’s Royal Rumble and the part the fans played in making it happen.

Drew Gulak, Jack Gallagher, & TJ Perkins TJP vs. Gran Metalik, Kalisto, & Lince Dorado

Kalisto and Gulak to start, Drew hot at the Philadelphia crowd for chanting. Collar and elbow, Gulak with a waistlock takedown, Kalisto rolls out and does his “Lucha!” taunt. Waistlock of his own, Drew reverses with an armbar, kneels on the wrist, cover comes up empty, Kalisto picks the leg and folds him up, spinning inverted figure four leglock!

Break, tags to Gallagher and Metalik, knucklelock, Gran rolls through, picks the leg, snapmare, crucifix, only good for one and we cycle to Dorado and TJP. Perkins with a wristlock, Lince reverses, tag to Kalisto, side headlock, big flying mare, Perkins to his feet, drop down, leapfrog, handstand headscissors into a dropkick and a tag to Dorado. Duck a punch, throw a chop, whip reversed, TJ cartwheels out of a monkey flip!

Dorado pastes him with a right, slides under, arm drag, Frankensteiner, leg pick into a standing moonsault, only two! Whip, TJP ends up on the apron and Lince dropkicks him to the floor! Low bridge sends Gulak to meet him, the lucha lads get up on the post... TRIPLE MOONSAULTS TO THE FLOOR!

Short break, Perkins puts Lince into the turnbuckles, whip across, Dorado gets a boot up, to the second, he jumps into a dropkick! Tag to Gulak, boot to the face, post the knee, tag to Jack. Romero Special partially applied, he stomps the knees, cover gets one and the Gentleman goes after the knee something fierce. Tag back to Gulak, continuing to beat on him, tag to TJP, double rolling leglock into an inverted Indian deathlock.

Blocking the tag, cravate applied, tag to Gallagher. Stomp to the face, he knocks Kalisto off the apron and goes to the second, where Drew insists he gets down and they have a whole argument of it. Gallagher walks the ropes, falls off... nobody home! Tags made, Metalik in on Gulak, handspring backflip leapfrog, duck the lariat, Arabian press wheelbarrow arm drag, and around the corner for the dropkick!

Perched up top, Gran walks the ropes, Gran Naniwa elbow drop... JACK BREAKS IT UP! Kalisto tags in, malfunction at the junction, Dorado hits a double Lethal Injection to send them to the floor, Metalik follows it up with a tope con giro, Kalisto with the lateral press.. NOPE! TJP tags in, Kalisto dropkicks Gulak to the floor, Detonation Kick denied, waistlock, standing switch, Kalisto pops out of an O’Connor roll...

Gran Metalik, Kalisto, & Lince Dorado win by pinfall with Salida del Sol from Kalisto on TJP.

TJP bickers with Gulak and Gallagher after the loss.

Charlotte Flair joins the panel to talk about the women’s Royal Rumble and wanting to have entered it to challenge Alexa to a champion vs. champion match at WrestleMania. This is followed by another historical package, this time for the 1992 Royal Rumble.

We go to the social media lounge with Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens. KO says it’s not like they have anything better to do than sit here and talk to Renee. Zayn mocks a man’s grammar and the way he spells his own name and Owens admits he’s not answering questions any more, just blocking people. A question of if the guy who gets the pin has more validity as champion comes up but they insist that they’ll be equal.

Two sideplates, two fantastic competitors, do the math. Kevin and Sami refuse to answer a question from Peter Rosenberg but are happy to answer Jerry Lawler. They bring up him eliminating Max Moon in 1993 and are asked if they have a “straightly” for tonight, and Owens cottons on, realizing Young is cherry-picking the best questions he’s already swatted down.

They do have a strategy, though, but they’re not giving it out because they don’t want to give AJ Styles any more of a chance than they need to. Rosenberg starts talking and they “Nope!” him off and Lawler asks if they should get a handle they can jiggle when Peter’s mouth starts running. This gets KO to bring up the idea that Rosenberg actually pays to be on the shows and he hits on the idea of talking to Matt Hardy about DELETING him.

The Road to KOMania III kicks off tonight and there’s so many tweets from Quebec that are excited to see them win, and this leads to an extended sequence in French. Another historical video follows, about the 1995 Royal Rumble.

Balor Club (Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows) vs. the Revival (Dash Wilder & Scott Dawson)

Anderson and Dawson to start, collar and elbow, Scott backs the bigger man in the corner and hits a forearm to the chop. Chop and a punch, Karl throwing uppercuts to back him off but he takes a kick to the midsection, snapmare to a shoulder block, drop down, Machine Gun hits a leg lariat! Arm wringer, tag to Gallows, double whip into a double back body drop and Dawson hits the floor.

Wilder checks on him and stops Luke from going after him but his tag isn’t recognized by referee Shawn Bennett. Never fear, Dawson pulls ahead by raking the eyes and tags Dash in for a strike combo. Big right from a big hoot and he bields Wilder into the corner for body blows and a big slicing right! Scoop slam, one for Scott as well, whip across and Dawson pulls Dash out of the ring to send us to a quick house ad break.

We’re back with Anderson shooting Wilder off into a blind tag! Right hands, Wilder catches a boot, tosses it to Dawson, dragon screw over the ropes! In the ring, repeated elbow drops to the knee, snapping the leg to the mat, dropkick to the back of the head, guillotine leg drop and he hangs Karl in the Tree of Woe. Dash tags in, they pummel Machine Gun and Wilder stomps the knee.

Spinning toehold into a kneeling toehold, wrenching back, keeping the pressure up but Anderson kicks him away a few times. Stepover toehold, falling back on it, but Karl boots him in the face and Scott tags Wilder in. Grabbing the leg, another tag, dragon screw denied as Anderson throws punches, Dawson tries one and Karl sits down into a pin for a nearfall!

Standing stump puller applied, tag to Dawson, spinning toehold but Anderson is able to kick him out of the ring. Back in, tag to Dash and Karl manages to tag Luke in! Big rights, Stinger splash, big boot, off the ropes, big splash, a wicked roundhouse kick for Dawson! Superkick for Wilder, Anderson hobbles in for Magic Killer but Scott breaks it up! Dash kicks the knee but Karl’s able to hit the spinning spinebuster and make the tag back to Big Hoot!

The action goes outside, Scott dodges and Gallows goes into the ringpost! Chop block on Anderson...

The Revival win by pinfall with an over-rotated lateral press on Karl Anderson.

John “Bradshaw” Layfield replaces Jerry “the King” Lawler on the panel for the second half. They run down the card for tonight and toss to a video recap of NXT TakeOver: Philadelphia from last night. We get a handcam video from Rusev Day singing about Rusev Day.

Alundra Blayze joins the panel, replacing Otunga. She talks about how every era of women’s wrestling meant something different and she would have loved to have a Royal Rumble. She then says she’d like to beat Asuka’s ass and break her streak! Badgered to pick a winner, she dithers and eventually settles on Nia Jax. We go back out to Sam Roberts with the crowd for a minute.

This is followed by a video package for the Universal Championship match and panel discussion thereof. A video package on the 1998 Royal Rumble follows.

Time for Bobby Roode’s United States Open Challenge. He comes out and says tonight is all about the numbers, starting with thirty and ending with one, much like the United States Championship Tournament went from eight to one, and that one is absolutely... glorious. The United States Championship has a rich history and tradition and he couldn’t think of a better place than the birthplace of America to keep it alive.

It’s Mojo Rawley!

Bobby Roode (c) vs. Mojo Rawley (WWE United States Championship)

Collar and elbow, Rawley throws Roode away and shoves him into the corner. Shoulder block knocks him down on a charge, jawing at him, Bobby comes back with punches and chops, whip reversed but he levels Mojo with a lariat! Charging in, Manhattan Drop, Russian legsweep, cover barely gets one and Rawley gets right up. Arm wringer, right hand breaks the wristlock and he shoves Roode off the ropes but almost gets caught by the Glorious DDT on the rebound.

Leading him outside and back in, Mojo bumps him off the apron into the barricade, three-point stance... Pounce into the barricade! Setting him back in, cover gets a nearfall, and we head to a break for a house ad.

Back from our break, Mojo is in control and slamming Bobby into the turnbuckles back first repeatedly. Across the ring, Roo starting to fight back but Rawley clobbers him with knees and wilts him. Snapmare, rear chinlock with a knee to the back, the champion gets to his feet and breaks with a back suplex! Blockbuster countered, Roode slips out, off the ropes, flying forearm, a lariat, lying in wait, charging in, corner lariat and the swinging neckbreaker but it’s not enough to get the job done.

To the corner, the blockbuster connects but the Glorious DDT is blocked, fireman’s carry countered to a folding press, no good! Thrust spinebuster from Mojo gets a nearfall and he follows it up with disdainful slaps, jawing at the champion. Drawing him up, he runs the ropes right into the spinning spinebuster for two. Glorious DDT countered again with a back body drop this time!

Rawley puts Bobby into the post shoulder first, sets him up and charges in but Roode blocks the punch with a boot! Hooking him...

Bobby Roode wins by pinfall with a tornado Glorious DDT, retaining the WWE United States Championship.

The panel runs down tonight’s card and shills for the WWE Network for those of you watching on YouTube or elsewhere one more time before tossing to a video package on the 2008 Royal Rumble. The Nature Boy himself, Ric Flair joins the panel to discuss the men’s Royal Rumble match. Discussion of the WWE Championship match follows and Ric laments not being able to drink tonight.

We get one last rundown of the card and that’s it for the pre-show.

The main show kicks off with a video package running through some of our top feuds in short and then focusing on the idea that the winner of the men’s Royal Rumble gets to headline WrestleMania and putting over the historical nature of the women’s Royal Rumble.

AJ Styles (c) vs. Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn (WWE Championship Handicap Match)

Owens to start, but he denies a test of strength and immediately tags Zayn in. Sami then fakes AJ out and tags Kev back in. Circling, knuckle lock, Styles with a kick to the gut, he sends KO off the ropes but he holds on and blocks. Rushing past referee Mike Chioda, Owens tags Zayn back in. Circling, collar and elbow, Sami with a waistlock, standing switch, reversals, AJ with a schoolboy pin and Zayn breaks away into his corner.

Owens legal, waistlock, standing switch, another, KO picks the leg to break that one but AJ hits the kip-up Frankensteiner! Styles blocks the way to Sami, Owens runs outside and slides back in and makes the tag. Zayn with a side headlock, shot off, leapfrog, drop down, dropkick from the champion! Kev tags back in and argues with Chioda before putting a boot to Styles and beating him down in the corner.

Taking him over to Sami, beating on him more, tag made and Zayn puts boots to the Phenomenal One, choking him in the ropes. Drawing him up, big chop, another, Styles returns two of his own, whip reversed and a back body drop gets two for the Yep! Movement! Tag to KO, hard whip in the corner, more boots, he kicks the champion to the floor and follows, throwing him over the timekeeper’s barricade!

Back inside, cover gets one and he grinds his forearm into AJ’s face before hitting a double stomp to the chest and tagging Sami back in. Right hands, knee to the back and a rear chinlock applied, trying to grind the WWE Champion down. Styles to his feet, body blows but he puts Sami into his own corner and KO is able to tag back in. WICKED right hand from AJ, backing Owens up with chops!

Whip reversed, going up and over he gets cut off, electric chair facebuster connects... NOPE! Reverse chinlock applied to follow that up, keeping AJ grounded and sapping the life out of him. Out of that, he sets the cannonball up but lands lame on the leg Styles went after on SmackDown! Sami tags in, they end up in the corner, AJ gets control... AVALANCHE FRANKENSTEINER!

Sami tags Owens back in but Styles is right on him with a Pele kick! Tag right back to Zayn, he’s got the Helluva Kick lined up but AJ plants him with a boot and follows it up with the moonsault inverted DDT! Sami crawls back over, tag to KO, Styles fighting htem off two for one, Owens with a monkey flip but AJ lands it as a Frankensteiner on Zayn!

Picking the leg, rolling through, Styles has the Calf Killer on KO! Flagging, screaming agony... SAMI MAKES THE SAVE! AJ removes Zayn from the ring and gets caught in a schoolboy for a nearfall! He passes Owens’ shoulder into the post but Sami is able to tag himself in. Blue Thunder Driver denied, waistlock in the ropes, AJ breaks with an elbow but Kev hits a superkick, the Blue Thunder Driver works this time... NOT ENOUGH!

Chops and slaps in the corner, Zayn sets the champion up top, thinking about maybe the brainbuster but Styles slips out and trips him up! Dodge to the apron, he knocks Owens down, takes the pad down, Phenomenal Forearm... KO BREAKS IT UP! Styles and Zayn trading forearms in the middle of the ring, giving it everything they’ve got left in the tank and AJ wins the exchange!

Double leg pickup to block the tag, he dumps Sami to the floor but turns around into a superkick! Pop-up powerbomb reversed...

AJ Styles wins by pinfall with a victory roll pin on Kevin Owens despite there being a question of whether KO was the legal man, retaining the WWE Championship.

Backstage, Owens and Zayn are yelling at Shane McMahon about this latest injustice. KO eventually calms down a little and apologizes for yelling but says he can’t be screwed out of another title. Shane, asked if he saw it, says “Yep!” and Kev loses his mind as we cut away.

The Usos cut a promo about “these two chumps”, saying they’ve been asked about how they’re getting ready for this, but they stay ready, and they ask how you prepare for them, and the answer is you can’t. They welcome Gable and Benjamin to the Uso Penitentiary.

Chad Gable & Shelton Benjamin vs. the Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) (c) (WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship 2/3 Falls Match)

Shelton and Jey to start, Benjamin getting right on him, forearms, powerbomb clutch and the tag made but Jey slides away. Jimmy gives them a round of applause and Jey gets back in it, waistlock, standing switch, reversals on reversals, Jimmy with the blind tag, he blocks Chaos Theory, they go for a Superkick Party but Chad slides to the floor! Brief strategy session with Shelton, back inside, he slides low and picks a leg, transition to a waistlock, big waistlock takedown.

To the corner, referee Jason Ayers forces the break and Jimmy turns him around for a big chop! To the corner, up and over, Gable laid out, side headlock, blind tag from Shelton and the Olympian chop blocks Jimmy Uso! Benjamin yanks his leg out and wraps it around the ringpost! Back in, off the ropes, chop block, spinning toehold, tag back to Chad.

Staying on the knee, stepover knee drops to the knee, spinning toehold, and into a kneeling toehold. Jimmy slips out, tries to crawl away and gets dragon screwed before Gable tags Shelton back in. Knee drop into a kneeling toehold, switching to a leg grapevine when he starts to get away and he tags Chad back in. Jimmy fighting back out of the corner, big chops, but Gable hits another dragon screw!

Reverse dragon screw on the mat, tag to Benjamin and he clears Jey Uso off the apron. Knee drop to the head, Jimmy throwing a few more chops, 540 enzuigiri and Uso has the space to look for the tag! Jey tagged in, he clears house, lariats for everybody! Mule kick and a slap, Samoan drop denied, Gable with the blind tag but Jey murks him and dives on Benjamin!

Back in, another dive for Chad! Inside the ring again, diving crossbody gets a nearfall! Running hip attack, Jey climbs up top to follow it but the splash comes up empty! Waistlock reversed, O’Connor roll, Benjamin with a cheap shot, folding press, nope! Double chickenwing applied, Tiger suplex... NOPE! Tag made, Jey up for the powerbomb but he reverses and Gable adjusts to a missile dropkick!

Shelton powerbombs Jey into Jimmy, hits Paydirt... NOT ENOUGH! Benjamin pulls Jey up but eats a forearm, jumping reverse roundhouse, tag to Gable... MOONSAULT TO THE FLOOR ON BOTH USOS! Gable puts Jimmy Uso back in but he’s not legal and Jey takes his head off with a superkick! Jimmy has one for Shelton, Jey goes up top, diving splash... NO GOOD!

The Usos win the first fall by pinfall with stereo superkicks on Gable, going 1-0.

Shelton puts Jey into the post and rouses Gable, putting boots to him before heading out to beat on Jimmy some as referee Jason Ayers admonishes them. Benjamin picks him up... POWERBOMB / LARIAT COMBO ON THE FLOOR! Ayers checks on Jey but he wants it so we’re on! Rolling Koppo kick, Shelton legal, Jey thinks fast...

The Usos win the second fall by pinfall with a small package from Jey Uso on Shelton Benjamin, going 2-0, winning the match, and retaining the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship.
