A potential mixed martial arts showdown between current UFC Women’s featherweight champ Cris Cyborg and former UFC bantamweight titleholder Ronda Rousey has been talked about for years. When Rousey was undefeated in Dana White’s fed and Cyborg was the baddest woman outside of it, that was the money fight for women’s MMA.
Now, Rousey is coming off two decisive losses and White’s on record saying he thinks she’s done. Her controversial coach, Edmond Taverdyan, recently started talking about a return, however - and he mentioned the Brazilian Cyborg as a perfect opponent.
Cris isn’t interested any more.
As she told our sister site MMA Fighting:
“I’m in another stage of my career. I wanted to fight Ronda when she was psychologically well and confident.”
That doesn’t mean Cyborg wouldn’t face Rousey, though. The fighter worked to drum up interest in a scripted fight with SmackDown’s Becky Lynch this Summer (reportedly on their own), and she sees the squared circle as a much better fit than the Octagon for a match with Ronda:
“If Ronda is wanting to make the fight for the fans, I would still be willing to give them it, but I think it would be better to take place inside the WWE ring. For her it gets her one step closer to Hollywood and for me it would be another exciting challenge and a chance to test my athletic ability.”
I believe that’s what the kids call shade.
Still, if Ronda really is training for a transition to pro wrestling, there’s probably money in that feud... if she can swallow her pride.
That’s never been Rousey’s strong suit, however, so we probably shouldn’t hold our breath.
