As someone who comes from a long line of Bruno Sammartino superfans, I’m a little ashamed to admit I never once wondered if there was a connection between the long-reigning WWWF champion and Platinum-selling, Grammy-winning, Super Bowl halftime-performing artist Bruno Mars.

Mars, whose real name is Peter Gene Hernandez, revealed in an Instagram post that the childhood nickname he’s now known by was given in honor of Sammartino (he’s previously said his father started calling him “Bruno” when he was two).
