The match
AJ Styles defends the United States championship against Kevin Owens at tonight’s (Sun., Aug. 20, 2017) WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view (PPV) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The catch? SmackDown Live Commissioner Shane McMahon will act as special guest referee.
The story
After multiple matches that featured problematic officiating, Owens demanded a competent referee be brought in to work his rematch with Styles. SmackDown Live General Manager Daniel Bryan decided the right move would be to put McMahon in that spot, and Shane O’Mac agreed.
The following two weeks showed us just how bad a decision that was.

This didn’t deter anyone from going through with this very bad idea and now here we are.
What to expect
The chances McMahon will be an impartial official or doesn’t get involved in the action in some way or another are between slim and none. The interest is in how they handle that and what it will mean going forward.
Tune in tonight to find out.
