WWE SummerSlam 2017: Naomi vs. Natalya full match preview

SmackDown Women’s Title Match

Natalya vs. Naomi (c)

The champ will look to make a third-generation Feel The Glow, all while looking over her shoulder for the first (and second) ever Ms. Money in the Bank.

The Road to SummerSlam

I’m gonna write a few words about this program, but it’s pretty well summarized here. So if you’ve already pivoted to video, you can just watch this...

If you still like reading, here we go...

Natalya’s place in the wrestling business is well-documented. A third generation Superstar. Trained in the legendary Hart Dungeon. Former Divas champion.

But of late she’s taken on the role of den mother to the roster and crazy cat lady of Total Divas. A desire to change that is what fueled her heel turn, and it’s part of drove her to outlast Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Lana and Tamina in a Fatal 5Way Elimination match on Battleground to earn this SummerSlam title opportunity.

The champ hasn’t exactly been pressed over the past couple of months. Naomi defeated Lana in a series of short matches while a challenger was determined and the Money in the Bank drama played out.

Speaking of that drama, Carmella (and her back from suspension, friend who is a boy, James Ellsworth) looms over all this. Not only does she hold the briefcase containing a contract for a title shot at a time and place of her choosing, but she has a win over Naomi from a couple weeks - where she decided not to cash in despite having already pinned the champ, but let’s not dwell on that.

There’s little doubt she’ll be looking for an opportunity here, since whoever wins will be coming out of a hard fought battle with one of the best SmackDown has to offer.

What’s at stake?

The championship, and regardless of who leaves with it, the reputation of non-Four Horsewomen women on the main roster.

Naomi’s second run has been well received, and WWE is reportedly desperate to sell her glowing belt, but she hasn’t really had a chance to blow us away in the ring. Natty’s character work isn’t always the best, and he best days in the ring might be behind her, too, but she’s still much more likely to deliver a great match than Lana.

Then there’s the Princess of Staten Island. Obviously someone believes in her, but it’s debatable if WWE made the most of her MitB wins to get her over as a top heel. Could a SummerSlam win do the trick?

Tune into SummerSlam and keep it here on Cageside Seats to find out.
