The rise of Jinder Mahal has been one of the more amazing stories of 2017. And probably no one can appreciate the Maharajah’s success better than Drew McIntyre.
The pair were members of Heath Slater’s comedy stable 3MB when they were released in 2014. Their paths back to WWE were different, but they’re both been very successful since returning. And even with Drew getting ready to challenge for the NXT title at TakeOver: Brooklyn III the night before SummerSlam, where Jinder will defend his WWE championship for the third straight pay-per-view (PPV), they haven’t forgotten their history.
As Sean Waltman’s guest on this week’s XPac 12360 show on Afterbuzz TV, McIntyre looked back fondly on their 3MB run. And in relaying the story of what he was doing May 21 when Mahal won the belt at Backlash, their bond is evident - and you can tell the gimmick’s still with them:
I was there the night in Chicago... I did the pre-show for the TV for NXT the night before, we stayed for the PPV the next day with him and Randy. I didn’t want to know the result, I told both of them don’t tell me, I watched it from the crowd. And when he won, most of the NXT roster were going to the bus, I sprinted off like the bloody Ultimate Warrior straight to gorilla and I was right waiting there when he got back. I was so over the moon for him - I’d have to bust out a big 3MB guitar thing when he got the three count.
Like Jinder, Drew told Waltman he has no regrets about the time he spent as a faux-musician jobbing for laughs. And, also like the current WWE champ, he sees a day when they’ll get the band back together... with one difference:
We had all those fun times and now we’re doing what we’re doing now and maybe one day... we can re-form the group where we don’t have to take bumps any more.
