By now, you probably know the deal: Jon Jones vs. Brock Lesnar, a legitimate “superfight,” is probably going to happen. Lesnar is interested, and already posturing, and Jones is just as, if not more, interested. The UFC, while maintaining a certain measure of distance for the time being, is clearly interested.
After all, they allowed Jones to use some of his post-fight cage time at UFC 214, where he knocked out Daniel Cormier to become light heavyweight champion and reestablish himself as arguably the best active fighter in the world, to call Lesnar out, who immediately issued a response to The Associated Press.
Now, WWE is making it part of television storylines, with Paul Heyman threatening to leave the company after SummerSlam if he loses the Universal title. While the Jones fight wasn’t mentioned, the implication was clear.
If it wasn’t, WWE.com picked up the slack while writing about the potential superfight, even teasing Jones appearing on WWE programming:
With Lesnar focused on his upcoming Universal Championship defense against Roman Reigns, Braun Strowman and Samoa Joe in a Fatal 4-Way Match at SummerSlam, does he have the time to seriously ponder a showdown with Jones? And, if so, could we perhaps see "Bones" enter a WWE ring to make this dream match a reality?
No, Jones isn’t going to wrestle in WWE butthe next logical step is an appearance at SummerSlam, right? If UFC wants to make the fight bad enough, and it appears they do, and WWE wants to keep its “Beast” happy, why not do some cross promotion? The two companies have dealt with each other in the past, with Ronda Rousey making an in-ring appearance at WrestleMania 31 and Lesnar going to UFC for a fight with Mark Hunt while still under contract to WWE last year.
Running an angle at one of WWE’s biggest pay-per-view events of the year only helps both sides.
Right?
