This whole free agent thing is starting to make a lot more sense... Use him while you can.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news a short time ago that John Cena has been cast as a male lead in next movie in Paramount’s Transformers franchise, the spin-off Bumblebee.
Production on the flick, a prequel to the main Transformers movies set in the late 80s and centered on the fan favorite Autobot, starts today in California. Cena obviously won’t be there for every day of shooting, but he may be needed a lot more often on an effects-driven blockbuster like this than he is for one of the comedies he’s been featured in up until now.
Paramount is aiming to have Bumblebee in theaters by Dec. 21, 2018. Cena joins stars Hailee Steinfeld and Jorge Lendeborg in the Travis Knight directed, Christina Hodson penned movie.
It’s an interesting time for the franchise, as this year’s The Last Knight “underperformed” to the tune of “only” $568.9 million worldwide since its June release, so the spin-off won’t have as much momentum going for it as it did when originally announced.
Still, this is a plum gig for Cena as he continues his transition to life after the ring.
