AJ Styles won a battle royal to earn a shot at the United States championship at tonight’s (Sun., July 23, 2017) WWE Battleground pay-per-view (PPV) at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Then a thing happened before getting here: he beat Kevin Owens to win that very title at a house show at Madison Square Garden.
They still went ahead with the match, of course, only it would be Owens challenging Styles for his belt.

The match was hot but heated up when the referee took a bump and Styles quickly put Owens in the Calf Crusher. Owens turned it around with a crossface while the referee got his wits about him. Then they reversed it and once again the ref stirred. When he finally came to, he counted Owens reversing the crossface into a pin that didn’t look like a pin and/or looked like everyone’s shoulders were down.
Still, Owens was declared the winner and he is, once again, the US champion.
