WWE BATTLEGROUND LIVE BLOG & MATCH COVERAGE

California sun, but you're still in bed and the California rain is turning red. No sign of life or the keepers of doom in Charlie and the keeper's scarlet room, but signs of a liveblog for this her pro wrestling show, right here on Cageside Seats. Read on!

The pre-show opens with Renee Young welcoming us to the show and introducing the panel, consisting of Sam Roberts, David Otunga, and Jerry "the King" Lawler, before tossing to Kayla Braxton in the social media lounge, where she informs us that she's taking questions for Maria and Mike Kanellis.

The panel runs the card down in short before tossing to a video package for John Cena vs. Rusev. Cena is interviewed backstage and he says it's an interesting match he's in, where you have to grab your flag and plant it in the holder at the finish, so it's an unpredictable scrap.

He says he said he's ready, and he came back and said he wants to be the best, and he knows what's at stake. People will see amazing things at Battleground, but they'll remember him standing tall or failing, and there's no way he can stand proudly in a WWE ring and tell the universe he's going to be the best without succeeding tonight, and you're damn right he's ready.

The panel discusses the match and shills for the WWE Network for those of you watching on YouTube, before tossing to a video package for the SmackDown Women's Championship #1 Contender's Elmination Match. Carmella joins the panel for discussion of the match after.

Footage of AJ Styles making an appearance at a baseball game follows, and then we get a proper video package for the United States Championship match. AJ is interviewed and says the title represents what you've earned, that it's for the workhorse of the WWE, and he's not losing it until somebody works harder than he does.

Kevin Owens is watching on a monitor and an interview rolls up to ask him about it and he says Styles thinks he's quiet, but the difference between them is that AJ has to tell everybody how good he is, but Owens doesn't have to say anything for people to know that he's the best, that he's the new face of America. He doesn't need to say it anymore, and people know he deserves the title, and they know that it's the Kevin Owens Show, so he doesn't need to say that either.

He vows to take the title back and says AJ can say he's not man enough, but he'll be proven more of a man than AJ Styles ever will be because he's Canadian. The panel discusses the match and offer their predictions before tossing to the social media lounge.

Mike and Maria are obnoxiously lovey here. First question is about Maria wrestling and she says she is in the ring, doing everything she can to help her man, and that makes her a harder worker than most of the women here, building their power, the power of love. Asked about his strategy, Mike makes fun of the person's username before saying he's going to do exactly what he did on Tuesday, punch Sami Zayn in the head as hard as he can.

Next question is about finding love, and Maria says sometimes you just have to wait until the right person looks at you with those big beautiful blue eyes from across the room and you know that's the perfect person for you. But unfortunately since there's only one of each of them, that won't happen for anybody else, because their love, the power of love, is one of a kind.

The interviewer bids Mike good luck and he says he doesn't need luck, because he has love, and then the panel discuss the interview and the match. They run the card down in short again before cutting away for our first match.

Aiden English does his usual singing intro listing off nicknames for himself and proclaiming himself the greatest thing you'll ever see in WWE.

Aiden English vs. Tye Dillinger

Collar and elbow, struggling in it, English gets a headlock and shoots him off. Grabbing a wristlock, wrenching Dillinger down, but Tye spins him around and snapmares him away before flashing the ten fingers at him. Big uppercut, kick to the gut, English fighting back, whip across and Dillinger drops him with a lariat!

Stomps in the corner but Aiden punches him away and drives a knee into his back! Stomping away, right hand, to the corner, rolling solebutt, backsplash, and we take a little break.

Back from the ad, English throwing knees, standing reverse chinlock, wrenching it in as Dillinger flags. He does not, however, fail, fighting back to one knee and then to his feet, breaking the hold and backing Aiden in the corner. A dropkick evens the score and Tye throws a few chops.

Whip reversed, flying chop, strike rush, stomp in passing, he takes the knee pad down but English bails! Following after, the singing man gets a kick off, back in the ring but the Perfect Ten has a spinebuster for him! Setting Aiden up top, chop connects, thinking superplex but he's fought back with punches and a headbutt, English perches, diving crossbody, Tye rolls through... NOPE!

Fireman's carry, English gets the ropes, slips away, falling front facelock drop... NOT ENOUGH! Aiden lets the pressure of the moment get to him before struggling up and composing himself. Mocking ten fingers, fireman's carry, Dillinger slips out and they trade pinning predicaments. Back splash dodged, mounted punches but English pulls him down and capitalizes...

Aiden English wins by pinfall with a pop-up reverse STO.

The preshow panel shills for the WWE Network some more and we get some footage of Jinder Mahal and the Singh Brothers arriving in the building early today for an interview in Punjabi. A video package for the match follows, as well as panel discussion of the same, to close out the pre-show.

The show proper opens with a video focusing on the Flag Match to start, running through the matches with a theme of colors.

Big E then does the deal and New Day make their entrance.

Kofi in big with a dropkick out the gates on Jey Uso! Tag to Woods, off the ropes, kick to a sliding lariat to a splash and a diving elbow drop, only one! Quick thinking and tags from the Usos puts Xavier in peril, 540 enzuigiri wipes him out, cover only gets two and Jimmy tags in.

Big hip attack, only two, choking Woods over the middle rope, Jey gets a kick in from the apron and tags in. Demolition Decapitation, drawing him up, setting him in the turnbuckles, big slicing right, Xavier is in a bad way as a chop nearly takes him to the outside. Woods fighting back with headbutts, knocking Uso down, he perches and throws a missile dropkick for some separation!

To the apron, right hand, Penalty Kick for Jimmy, back drop for Jey, tag to Woods, Kingston perching, trust fall... countered into a double powerbomb!

Xavier dives into an uppercut! Jimmy climbs, comes up empty on the splash, wheelbarrow, Woods reverses to a rolling Face Eraser... NO GOOD! Honor Roll countered into the Death Valley Driver into the turnbuckles and Jey tags in, tossed into the Samoan Drop... NOT ENOUGH! Calling for the Rikishi, Woods blocks with an elbow, up and over to the apron, Jey tags him with a forearm but Xavier fends him off and climbs the turnbuckles for the ropewalk elbow drop... JIMMY USO COUNTER SUPERKICK! XAVIER WOODS LIVES!

Jimmy heads over, Tequila Sunrise applied in the middle of the ring! Wrenching back, Woods screaming in torture and clawing, scraping, praying for the bottom rope... and he gets it! Referee Jason Ayers counts and Uso is forced to break! Tag to Kofi, the backbreaker / double stomp combo... SOMEHOW NOT ENOUGH!

Kofi with a dive, nobody home, superkick, tag to Jey, diving splash... KOFI KINGSTON KICKS OUT! Jimmy tags back in, the Usos climb opposite turnbuckles but Xavier takes Jey out and Kingston rolls away, Trouble in Paradise connects, Xavier steps onto the ropes...

New Day win by pinfall with the ropewalk elbow drop from Xavier Woods on Jimmy Uso, winning the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship.

AJ Styles is show backstage warming up.

Baron Corbin vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

Corbin jawing in Shinsuke's face to start and Nakamura just clobbers him with a forearm! Lone Wolf back with knees in the corner, and they continue brawling corner to corner. Shinsuke gets a few kicks off, another forearm or two and Baron heads outside. Nakamura follows but Corbin just heads back in and they kind of stalemate.

Heading back in, Baron cuts him off and stomps a proverbial mudhole in the King of Strong Style before picking him up for the bear hug! I can hardly bear it! Nakamura fighting out with back elbows, so the Lone Wolf obliges him, scooping him up for something and Shinsuke reverses into a triangle choke!

Corbin deadlifts him up, Nakamura slips away from the powerbomb, but Baron catches him with a boot! Dumping him outside, ramming his back into the barricade a few times, before taking it back in the ring. Drawing Shinsuke up, off the ropes, elbow to the gut, and back to the bear hug! It's unbearable!

Elbows, the Lone Wolf drives Nakamura's back into the turnbuckles again and keeps the bear hug on! Elbows once more, but Shinsuke gets caught by the goozle and escapes with a knee! 540 reverse roundhouse kick segues to chest kicks, Baron catches one but gets caught by the other leg. King of Strong Style off the ropes with a dropkick, knocking the big man down and putting him in the corner for a strike rush and Good Vibrations.

Setting him up top for the big corner knee lift, a second for good measure, but the pin is only good for two. Whip reversed, Corbin does the pass outside and back in thing and comes in with a huge lariat for a nearfall! Mounted punches, drawing Nakamura up for better impact and posing for the crowd is Corbin.

Drawing him up for a suplex, Shinsuke fires a knee off and follows with several right to the ribs. Gourdbuster connects, lying in wait, thinking Kinshasa but he runs into Deep Six! NO GOOD! Slugging it out, Corbin gets the goozle but Nakamura counters into a lungblower, off the ropes, spinning kick lays him out!

Guillotine leg drop to the back of the neck, Shinsuke's fired up, calling for it, lying in wait as Corbin lies out on the mat. He goes over and picks Baron up, thinking inverted powerslam, and the Lone Wolf mule kicks him right in the gentleman's area!

Shinsuke Nakamura wins by disqualification.

Corbin collects his Money in the Bank briefcase and walks out holding it high, as if he's the real winner, before turning around halfway up the ramp to attack Nakamura with it! End of Days!

We get a promo video for SummerSlam next, and Kevin Owens is shown getting ready backstage.

Naomi makes her entrance ahead of the #1 contender's match to join the commentary booth for the match.

Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Lana vs. Natalya vs. Tamina (WWE SmackDown Women's Championship #1 Contender's Elimination Match)

Five-way standoff breaks down into mini-matches quickly, Charlotte chopping away on Lana only to get rolled up for one by Natalya. Sharpshooter attemp kicked off and Tamina throws Becky into Flair before covering her for two. Clubbing away at the Lasskicker, she runs the ropes and Lana yanks her outside and puts her into the announce desk!

Back in the ring Nattie gets kicked away by Snuka and Lana yanks her out of the ring and jaws at her before climbing back in. Charlotte in the ring with Tamina and Lana, forearms for both but That Damn Numbers Game wins out and Snuka body slams her into an elbow drop from the Ravishing Russian. Stomping away, a kick to the throat, and Flair is in a bad place.

She manages to evade another slam with a float over into a mat slam and knocks Tamina down before facing off with Lana, but Tamina makes the save and Charlotte eats a big kick for a nearfall. Straight suplex from Tamina, a kick from Lana, whip in the corner, chopping and stomping away at the Queen.

Lynch recovers and hits the ring to attack Lana, stereo exploder suplexes, and Becky charges in only to get swept by Flair. Arm drags, good recovery, in and out of the corner, Charlotte hits a swinging neckbreaker and Neidhart comes in hot with a nearfall off a dropkick. Waistlock denied, back elbow, Becky hits a pair of lariats, arm and leg, rolling solebutt, exploder suplex!

Lana in, she eats another exploder suplex herself, Tamina in, hooked but she blocks, superkick! Samoan drop on Natalya! Flair in to run her over, she drags Nattie in the middle of the ring, thinking figure four but it's reversed to a small package for a nearfall and Neidhart follows with the discus lariat! Sharpshooter applied, but Lana makes the save with an X-Factor, lateral press on Flair... NOPE!

Becky from behind, Dis-Arm-Her applied but Tamina saves her running buddy, hits the Samoan drop, spear through the ropes on Charlotte! Natalya wins, last eliminating Charlotte by pinfall with a lateral press to become #1 contender to the WWE SmackDown Women's Championship.

Naomi gets in the ring after and offers a handshake, but her SummerSlam opponent cold-shoulders her and walks up the ramp.

AJ Styles (c) vs. Kevin Owens (WWE United States Championship)

Circling, Owens gets in with a kick, club to the back, knee lifts into a side headlock, wrenching Styles to one knee. AJ shoots him off and takes the shoulder block, drop down, leapfrog, big arm drag and KO takes a powder. Back in, circling, Styles goes behind for a waistlock, standing switch, working the fingers for a switch of his own but Kev picks a leg to break.

Headscissors from the mat from the Phenomenal One and KO bails again. In with a lariat, AJ counters with a boot, waistlock, another standing switch, again, Owens with a back elbow to break, off the ropes and he runs right into a dropkick. Fighting on the outside, whip reversed and Kev takes the barricade hard but is able to sidestep the Stinger splash and crotch Styles on the ringpost!

Back in, cover gets two and KO grinds his forearm across AJ's face, declaring himself the real champ. Kick to the back, right hand, and now it's reverse chinlock time, taking Styles to the mat. AJ fights to his feet but Owens muscles him right back down to the mat, declaring that he can do this all day.

Again Styles fights to his feet, throwing elbows, and this time Kev choose a mat slam and a senton, but the knees are up! Elbow on elbow, Styles Rush, Owens cuts it off early with a DDT, only a nearfall! But an opportunity to go for the reverse chinlock once more and lock the champ down.

Corner lariat, fireman's carry denied, thinking back suplex but Owens fights out, back suplex of his own, AJ lands on his feet and hits the back suplex facebuster for two!

Jockeying for position, back to the waistlocks from the beginning of the match, O'Connor roll denied, superkick caught, Styles Clash evaded and Owens Hot Shots Styles for a nearfall with a handful of tights! Ushigoroshi gets a nearfall in return, AJ drags him over, springboard 450 splash... THE KNEES WERE UP BUT IT'S NOT ENOUGH TO END IT!

Cannonball follows, again just two, drawing Styles up, setting him up in the corner, maybe thinking about the fisherman buster but AJ fights back, floats over, looking for a sunset flip powerbomb but KO hangs on, so he shifts, Argentine backbreaker rack, a few shakes, spin it out into the powerbomb... NO GOOD!

Styles climbing again, Owens cuts him off and crotches him, right hand, joining him, struggle in the corner but again AJ slips out and this time puts him face first into the turnbuckle. Up and over, an elbow connects, thinking Phenomenal Forearm but Kev bails, so he stops short, and Owens takes his legs out from under him!

Bad landing on the shoulder, Owens puts him into the post, double knee armbreaker, Styles cuts the attack off with an enzuigiri, trying the Styles Clash but his shoulder gives out, KO picks him up and throws him into referee Brian Nguyen! A superkick follows, he draws him up, off the ropes, leapfrog counters the powerbomb, Calf Killer applied in the middle of the ring!

Owens fighting, he rolls through into an arm-trap crossface! AJ struggles to his feet, rolls through, an arm-trap crossface of his own while Nguyen tries to remember where he is and what he was doing! Owens rolls through, Nguyen counts but it looks like both men's shoulders are down...

Kevin Owens wins by pinfall rolling through a crossface into a pinning predicament, winning the WWE United States Championship.

Jinder Mahal is getting ready backstage when the Singh Brothers roll up to apologize for not being able to help him in the Punjabi Prison. He tells them not to worry, that he'll trap the Viper and end his legacy, and he won't be alone when the 1.3 billion people of India are celebrating him as the greatest champion of all time.

John Cena vs. Rusev (Flag Match)

Rusev going right for the Bulgarian flag but Cena grabs a side headlock and pulls him away. Hard shot to the kidneys, trying to climb, again with the side headlock. Rusev fights him off, gets on the turnbuckles, and John meets him, cuts him off, and hits an avalanche bulldog, crawling to the US flag after.

The Bulgarian Brute cuts him off with an electric chair drop, punch into kicks, stomping a proverbial mudhole, straight suplex, headed to climb but Cena crawls after and desperately holds on. Rusev with a kick, short-arm lariat, disdainful palm strikes, shoving the 16-time champion aside and taking him into the American corner to tell him he's not grabbing it.

Corner avalanche, Rusev climbs and again John cuts him off. Fighting back, kicks, diving brain chop, Cena throws right hands and gets them in return, and a DDT puts the Bulgarian Brute ahead once again. Crawling to America, wake up, shoulder blocks, duck the lariat, falling Blue Thunder Driver, Five Knuckle Shuffle, Rusev slips out of the fireman's carry and hits a spinning spinebuster before dumping Cena outside.

Climbing, Cena comes in from the outside to cut him off, headbutt, right hand, flat back bump to the mat, crawling up, Kobashi leg drop but Rusev catches him in a powerbomb! Rusev retrieves the Bulgarian flag! John catches him with a dropkick and crawls for the US flag once again. Duck a corner avalanche, Attitude Adjustment connects!

Slow to capitalize, crawling, pulling himself up, he reaches the top and Rusev comes under him, thinking powerbomb but Cena rolls through, picks the leg and applies the STF! Rusev is tapping but it does nothing! Leaving Rusev for dead, Cena heads over and collects the flag... but Rusev connects with the thrust kick and lays him out!

Rusev grabs his flag and heads outside... Cena hits the double axehandle off the apron! He grabs the flag and heads up the aisle but Rusev attacks from behind! He puts John into the steel steps and picks them up to clobber him directly! Rusev collects his flag and heads up but Cena has a deathgrip on his leg! Punches, taking him up the stage, John puts him into the LED screens!

Step-up crossbody off the pedestal... RUSEV CATCHES HIM INTO A FALLAWAY SLAM! Rusev literally asks some crew members where the Bulgarian flag is before stumbling over and grabbling a table. He sets it up and goes to get another while Cena is crawling for the flag once more. Both tables set up, Rusev puts Cena's face into the podium a few times for good measure, mocking "You can't see me", thinking Attitude Adjustment but John reverses and throws him onto the ramp!

American flag collected, Rusev interposes himself, slugging it out into a double lariat. Both men crawling towards the podium, Rusev knocks the US flag stand off and locks the Accolade on Cena! Satisfied that he's incapacitated, Rusev collects his flag and walks over to the stand but John was lying in wait to stop him!

Fireman's carry, Rusev out with elbows, roundhouse kick lays Cena out again. Stomp to the back, Accolade on again but Cena stands up! Up the podium... AVALANCHE ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT THROUGH THE TABLES!

John Cena wins by placing the American flag in the flag holder on the American flag's assigned pedestal.

We get a new episode of the Fashion X-Files. Fandango says all their work has come to this moment, and Breeze calls him a hell of a partner, and they hug. The Ascension roll up and they say it was them the whole time. Tyler asks why and they say they felt like it. Dango says they weren't at the show, because they were at the Eddie Money show!

Ascension insist they did it but when Fandango shows them Tully's severed head they freak out, so obviously they didn't do it. Breeze wonders if it wasn't them who was it, and the lights go out and a ruckus fills the room. Fandango gets a flashlight and Tyler's been laid out! Someone knocks Fandango out from behind and the cameraman as well because we're stuck on a Dutch angle as Dango is drug out of frame by an unseen hand.

Mike Kanellis vs. Sami Zayn

Feeling out, Zayn thinking test of strength, Kanellis with a boot but Sami has the double leg takedown into mounted punches! To the apron, shoulder block through the ropes, slingshot up and over, off the ropes, tilt-a-whirl headscissors connects, block the punch, throw one in return.

Chops corner to corner, Zayn in charge for now, whip, clothesline to the outside, off the ropes, thinking about a dive but Maria pushes Mike out of the way for the save. Sami gets out to jaw at her and Mike connects with that huge right hand of his and he and Maria enjoy some Eskimo kisses over his fallen body.

Back inside, a lariat gets two, stomps follow, face to turnbuckle pad, straight elbow, another, just pasting Sami over and over but again the cover is just a nearfall. Zayn back in with chops, but he's whipped to the corner and caught with a charging lariat. Another cycle of that, big boot, again just two, so Kanellis goes for mounted punches.

A kiss over the bottom rope, kneeling surfboard applied, Sami out with a few lariats, back body drop, jockeying for position, he passes Mike outside again, off the ropes, tope con giro! Back in, up top, diving crossbody gets a nearfall, looking for the Blue Thunder Driver to follow but Kanellis blocks with punches, trying a piledriver, blocked, knucklelock, Zayn with a step-up tornado DDT!

Short-arm into the exploder clutch but Maria gets in the ring to block it! Sami runs into a fireman's carry, slips out, catches Mike with the corner exploder...

Sami Zayn wins by pinfall with the Helluva Kick.

We get an ad for a movie that Shawn Michaels will be in as well as some hype for Talking Smack after the show, which will feature Natalya, Kevin Owens, and the winner of the Punjabi Prison Match.

The Punjabi Prison is lowered, it's main event time!

Jinder Mahal (c) vs. Randy Orton (WWE Championship Punjabi Prison Match)

Orton right in with punches, backing Mahal into the corner and throwing a headbutt. Whip, he catches Jinder with a kick to the face but gets dropped and the champion immediately calls for a door to be opened. Randy, of course, cuts him off and punches him a few times before trying to escape himself. Mahal meets him and beats on him, they struggle a little, the Viper puts him into the cage but the Maharaja blocks the escape by holding his leg and the first door is closed for good.

Randy throwing punches again, whip reversed into a double knee armbreaker and the champion capitalizes with repeated knee drops to the throat. Wrenching the arm around the bamboo, snapping it over the ropes, locking an armbar on and trying to keep Orton grounded. Stepover armbreakers follow and Jinder calls for a second door!

The Viper pulls him away, scoops him up, fallaway slam, but his escape is thwarted and the moment is lost, the second door closed for good as Orton fires mounted punches off. Stomping away at Mahal, he tries to put him into the cage but Jinder catches himself and starts climbing! Randy meets him, they trade blows, the challenger knocked to the mat but he collects himself and yanks the champion down, crotching him on the top rope.

Back-first, Jinder is sent into the cage, Orton thinking rope-hung DDT but he gets tossed into the cage himself. Charging clotheslines with Randy trapped between ropes and cage but Orton catches him and suplexes him into the cage. Another for good measure, an uppercut after, and the Viper is well in charge.

Orton calls for the door but (say it with me now) Jinder cuts him off and they struggle with each other in front of the door, the Viper getting a sleeper hold into an uppercut with just over ten seconds left but (loud and proud), Mahal stops him and the third door is closed for good.

Both men on the mat for a moment, Randy rallies first, snap scoop powerslam, rope-hung DDT, and he calls for the fourth and final door to be opened as he goes to that special place. But Jinder blocks the RKO, fires off a jumping knee in return, cobra clutch applied, up for Khallas... COUNTERED INTO THE RKO! BUT THE SINGH BROTHERS ARE HERE! THEY PULL JINDER OUT OF THE CAGE! THE DOOR IS CLOSED FOR GOOD WITH RANDY ORTON STILL IN THE INNER CAGE!

The Singhs try to rally Jinder and draw him up but he's woozy from the RKO and unable to climb just yet. Orton climbing as Mahal finally begins to, Orton gets to the top of the inner cage as Mahal is three quarters of the way up and he just hops over to the outer cage. Struggling, trading headbutt for punch, chop for face smash, and Jinder falls to the floor! But Randy gets pulled down by the Singh Brothers and they put the boots to him.

They push Orton into a boot from the champion and Mahal resumes climbing, the Singhs making the Viper watch but he struggles loose and hits a suplex on one before climbing after Jinder. Clubbing away, both men on the floor once more, Orton throws Mahal into the outer cage, suplexes the other Singh for good measure, and puts the first one into the cage to boot.

Jinder has a kendo stick and goes to town on Randy, wailing away at his back before hooking him for Khallas but Orton breaks by ramming his back into the cage over and over before grabbing a kendo stick of his own and laying a wicked shot into Mahal's neck. Shot after shot, some for the Singhs as well, Randy considers the hellacious structure he's trapped in and begins to climb.

Samir Singh slips outside to cut Orton off from a new angle, they trade punches... SAMIR FALLS OFF THE CAGE THROUGH THE ANNOUNCE TABLE! Jinder climbs to meet Randy and pulls him down again, they fight some more, and Randy gets the rope-hung DDT off. Orton gets a chair and waffles Mahal across the back with it again and again.

The Viper climbs once more and again Sunil Singh comes from behind to grab his legs but gets kicked to the floor for his trouble...

Great Khali is back.

What in the world?

Khali shakes the cage as Orton looks to climb out! The giant climbs and goozles Orton through the bars! He's choking the life out of him as Jinder climbs!

Jinder Mahal wins by escaping the outer cage, retaining the WWE Championship.

Khali and Jinder celebrate in the entryway as Randy Orton writhes in pain against the cage.

That's the show, folks.
