Austin Aries claimed Neville scraped by in two cruiserweight championship matches at separate pay-per-view (PPV) events. He also claimed he would take advantage of the Submission stipulation at tonight’s (Sun., June 4, 2017) Extreme Rules event at Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, Maryland.
Michael Cole told us there has only ever been one time in history a title has changed hands in a Submission match before tonight.
That remains true after tonight.
Aries’ knee injury came into play early on, with Neville going to work on it. Then he was attempting submissions that required the use of it, which was weird, and Neville didn’t really attack it with his submission attempts.
Aries actually locked in the Last Chancery and got Neville to tap to it ... outside the ring. That meant it wasn’t an official finish, as the referee made clear it had to happen in the ring.
Naturally, Neville made his comeback after making Aries miss on a suicide dive, following up with the Red Arrow and the Rings of Saturn. Austin tapped and he’s now lost three straight PPV title matches.
Long live the King.
