AJ Styles became top contender to the United States championship weeks ago but he’s been treading water while Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho settled their differences. They finally did so, once and for all, on this week’s episode of SmackDown Live when the former beat the latter to win the title he lost at Payback.
Then he sent Jericho packing for good (or at least for a while) with a post-match beatdown.
That clears the way for Styles to get his shot and WWE has officially announced that it will happen at the upcoming Backlash pay-per-view (PPV) scheduled for Sun., May 21, 2017, at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Illinois.
Here’s the updated match card:
- Randy Orton vs. Jinder Mahal (WWE championship)
- Kevin Owens vs. AJ Styles (US championship)
- The Usos vs. Breezango (SmackDown tag team championship)
